Going fishing sat morn.

So i'm going fishing sat morn, on a pier somewhere. Mostly bronte pier. So in browsing the MNR site for whats in season on lake ontario is, all trout, salmon, whitefish, sturgeon, and catfish. When i was younger only ones i remember seeing pulled from Bronte pier was salmon, catfish, and trout. And bass, but bass aint in season. Now the way I understand it, is that if its not in season, I can't keep it, which i dont ever do, unless i catch some massive n amazing one than ill take it to a taxidermist.

But of what is in season, what of them are the ones you would all suggest i try for, bein easiest, most common to catch, what ever everyone would suggest. I'm using the rod n reel that Yawn gave me, its a Mitchel rod, 6'6", um dont remember the other things i will get that info tomorrow unless Yawn posts it for me. What lb line should i use? how should I have it set it up? like do i put like a 2 or 3ft really clear piece on the end, and what type of lure would work the best. If the difference between a couple fish just being the lures, than i'll make sure i have multiple types.

I know I could probably find a lot of this info online, but i'm going to be pretty busy between now n than with work, n getting my gf's basement finished to get her moved in down there hopefully this weekend. So all the help I could get from everyone would greatly appreciated to enjoy my 1st time out in a long time. I had the biggest so far from Yawn(thanks again) for giving me the rod with a bunch of lures as well, and i found my grandpa's tackle box as well. So thank you in advance everyone for all the help i'm going to get, i've been looking forward to this day since i came across the forums!!!

You know what Porter? I would love to help, except I have ZERO experience with Lake Ontario piers...And at this time of the year, I guess you are going to catch trout...which I have never caught...

If I were to go and just start casting, I would use an all around combo...so your 6'6 should be good, and I usually have 8# trilene XL on it.....Except I don't know if it's going to be either too thick or too thin for trout...River guys use like 4# leaders.....And I guess I would be casting spoons / crankbaits? Maybe bring a couple of jigheads and put minnow immitations on it.

I currently don't believe in much fluoro leaders...I think mono is just as invisible........

So yea, sorry I'm not much help, but other people here would definitely know how to hook you up before Saturday.

thanks. is the leader what some people put on at the end of line that i was talking about thats just about as clear?

and i guess a question i forgot to ask as well, what type casting spoons / crankbaits should i use? and jigheads the the ones that have the hook and the front is like a small weight?

should i be adding weight? should i be adding a bobber? what distanced should i have between bobber on hook?

i'm sorry if its a lot, im just REAL clueless.

at this time of year i would use lures that resembled silvery minnows, shadraps allway work for me, but then again, i'm like edwin and heve never fished in lake ontario, and if your going to have a chance of catching big toothy fish, a sort wire leader might be advisable, plus it save you the trouble of tying knots every time you swich lures

Porter, the only things you'll be able to catch are trout and suckers. Since you haven't fished in years, I would say to start on something easier....suckers.
I think most rivers have sucker runs right now. i'm not sure about the west end, but here in the east, there are some fat suckers being landed right at the mouths.
use a float, a sinker, live bait hook and use worms. this way, it will get you back into fishing and a sense of whats going on and whatnot. adjust the depth accordingly... depending on how deep the section you are fishing.
after getting the hang of everything once again (hook sets, drag, fighting the fish, etc), feel free to try other techniques, species, etc.

if i were to be at a pier, i would probably be casting out some spoons like cleos in a metallic finish

pike is closed right now, so forget about leaders and whatnot, since you cannot target them. i'm not sure about this, but if a CO sees you casting with a wire leader and a big crank, he would probably think you're targeting pike. i know i would.

Anyways...hope this helps. I'm no expert with pier fishing though... i only go for the salmon run in the fall on the piers, and my setup is specific to that.

From what I hear the browns and rainbows are starting to move in to the river to spawn.
Smaller spoons, cankbaits are always a good bet.
Another is bottom bouncing roe bags are a good bet also.
Best to stay away from any steel leader and I would go to a three way swivel setup.
3-4 ft of 6 lb flouro. leader on the roe bag side

most of the spawn is over in all lake O tribs, but the fish are starting the trip back to the lake. so you still have good chances to catch them. this year is as weird as salmon run in the fall, happened earlier compared to seasons before. the opener is gonna suck.

haha, it is to, that was the last time i had gone fishing in the last 7-9 years. i didnt even catch it,lol. all day long my boss n 2 friends were pulling them out of the water, me? NOTHING!! so i went to my buddy, next time u get one on, let me bring it in, so i did, and stepping up the rocks to take that pic you see, i dislocated my knee and almost fell head first into the grand onto pointy rocks, i never let go on the fish btw,lol.

so your saying fish for suckers best bet, and maybe try some casting for trout?

i got for set up for suckers, just float, weight ( which about how far from the hook is ideal?) and worms. and than maybe spoons.

what about trout, what would be the ideal set up?

and the rain, i checked its suppose to be pretty bad sat morn but like 4-6 degress colder sun morn, so what would be more advisable?? sat morn in the rain, or sun morn with the colder weather??

like catfish setup? cause when i wa syounder, around this time i remember seeing some pretty big catfish come out of there at the pier,lol.

dude, just go to dunnville and fish channel cats. easy to fish for, fight like a truck. if u want suckers, just hit local creeks that flow to the lake, simple set up, hook, couple split shot weights and a worm on bottom. if u want trout, throw little cleo spoons off the pier, try different sizes and colors, and crankbaits, 3-5 inches in length. vary your color selection, try different retrieves, slow, fast, jerk it, long pauses, short pauses. you will most likely catch browns off the pier rite now, maybe a rainbow, but a lot of them have already started into the creeks to spawn.

were actually going to dunnville n ow instead sun morn. stopped in today me and my buddy who im going with after work, to out local outdoor shop (which i didnt know was there till this past mon) and he got us set up for catfish, got new and bigger appropriate rods for cat, reels, line, set up our lines for us. so its going to be sweet. i hope some of you int hat area might be going there sun morn, im getting up at 4am. lol.

but its going to be nice, cause i got this rod set up, n im going to have the one from yawn, if i wana go for smaller stuff or try it out as well, i'll have to get the exact rod n reel model i got, but the rod is a rino. my buddy got a nice shimano, and i wnated one as well, but that was his last one...:roll:

so here's my 2 rod set up, 1st is a mitchell f660-ms with a shock 2500-bi reel. 2nd set up is a Zebco White Rhino saltwater series spinning rod model wrs8om-s/w with a spining water safari sf5000 reel.
