Hi all

Frank and I are planning to go to Rice Lake and renting a boat this Wednesday. Won't be much boat traffic or other fishermen out there during the weekday. We'll go for just about anything but hope for eyes and bass. If you're available let me know.

crap..... that sounds like a good time, good luck, sir!

Thanks. Well if we can't find a third person to split, we may just go to Peterborough and shore. I might also consider going to the informal bass tourney on Rice from the guys and gals at Kawartha Anglers on Sat. Looks like it's going to be a big crowd.

I'm going to be up there this Friday if you're able to can you tell me how it was and the fish you caught.

Thanks,
Nick

Hey Grubs, how did Rice Lake go?

Did'nt make it for Wed, busy with stuff at home and then got invited for the Kawartha Anglers Bass/Walleye Derby for Sat. Got to get to bed now will let you know how that goes. Cold front moved in so will be tough fishing.

How did you make out? You were there when the cold front moved in. Hope you caught fish.

Hey Grubs, how did Rice Lake go?

It was bad. The cold front shut the fish down. My total catch was 3 perch, 1 crappie, 3 small bass, 2 pumpkinseed in 6 hours of fishing. The boat owner stayed in areas he'd had caught fish on a previous outting. As you well know cold fronts change a fish's peratory habits. They mostly went deep and stopped feeding. Everyone complained that it was the worst outing ever....lol. I somewhat enjoy a challenge even tho it's difficult to get them to bite with such a small strike zone. Still great to get out and meet new guys.

It's only natural(And Smart) to go back to the SPOTS that produced.... yet I too have experienced "Boat Owners" that seem overly STUBBORN in their need to continue what seems a fruitless pursuit.

You certainly, cant be RUDE... (Wouldnt)... they are the HOST, but after seriously trying areas - if your not getting the fish, TIME TO MOVE!

With lakes like RIce, I find the Depths make a HUGE DIFFERENCE! Especially on hot days or if there is a Temp Drop.
Nice to always fish structure or try the Weeds beds by shore... but if thats not working: GO DEEP! (or vice versa)

Just my thoughts

aha! yes, every dark cloud has a silver lining... I'm on the water tonight

You luck dog. I think a small cold front is moving in, the fishing should be hot for YOU....lol. Best of luck, get the ones I missed out on.

I did'nt mean it to sound like I was blaming the owner for not trying new spots. He did manage to land 4 bass. I'm guilty of the same stubborness too. I should have changed my go to lure to something similar to his. I have to confess that I did'nt try all my arsenal of lures as I usually would.
The problem/predominate feature of Rice is weeds. If not for the few bare mud bottomed areas it would be called Weed Lake....lol. Depth ya not much of that there......lol; but yes have to find that. Either buy a chart or get more time/experience on that lake.

For post cold front situations I know that you have to fish as slow as possible b/c as cold blooded animals they are lethargic at colder temps. Therefore, I did'nt throw active bass lures like cranks and spinner baits. I should have followed the leader and pitched a weedless "jig and pig". My mistake, this time.
Competition is suppose to bring out the best in us, for me it makes me realize what I have to do for next time. Will try to be more flexible and not fall into a pattern.
