Hey guys,

I'm going up to my friends cottage this weekend on Golden Lake around the Ottawa River area.

I'm planning on taking my gear up with me and hoping to get out a few times. Read that it's nto bad for bass and pike and my friend said that they do have some musky as well.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience up there and can let me know what to expect.

Cheers,
Mike

I had a buddy a few years ago who lived near Golden lake and he said the walleye fishery is amazing, healthy and big. Yes, everything is in Golden and he loved fishing it. All i can say is expect to tangle with all the major food groups of Ontario sportfishing and use the proven lures and techniques.... AND GRAB A HYDROGRAPHIC MAP!

Thanks Dugger!

That's good to know. I'm excited.

Was up at the French River 2 weeks ago and was hoping to get into some nice walleye action but only managed to land one small 16 incher. Up on the French, the only thing that seemed to be working was a simple worm on a hook. I've got some gulp minnows, grubs and an assortment of of jigs so I'll try out a few different things. Hopefully I'll come back with some new PB's.

Report will be put up upon return.

good luck sir! Jig those islands in the evenings, points, sunken bars, saddles and shoals.... throw that crankbait!

lol a 16 inch Walleye here in the INTERIOR of Niagara is a nice fish :)

I've never seen or caught a walleye/pickerel in real life, but a 16inch fish seems huge to the small 10 - 12 inches I'm catching.

Well it was my first time catching one. I'm only considering it small because the photo's I was seeing of the ones caught up in the lodge were 20+ inches.

I didn't snap a photo of the one I caught but this time I'll be sure to bring my camera with me and I'll come back with a nice report, hopefully.

yup... size is relative to the water body...

like walleye up to 27-28 inches are small in quinte in the fall...lol

I was always told muskie and pike were not in the same lakes tho I admit I never checked into that I just took their word for it haha is it true? can the two species coexist in the same body of water?

They definatley can co exist, if im not mistaken i believe there is such thing as a hybrid mix of pike and musky, but dont quote me.

Yes they can coexist, and yes it is called a tiger musky. Problem that is happening in canal lake and balsam lake is that pike are now taking over musky habitat. Musky spawn earlier than pike therefore the pike have a chance to eat musky fry and take over their spawning grounds, decreasing their numbers and eventually demolishing their population. You usually only find the two coexisting with both having good populations on large lakes like lake Ontario for example

Got back from golden lake. It was a big beautiful lake with clear water and nice weed beds. Did most of my fishing from the dock and from a floating platform in the lake about 30 feet offshore hovering over a nice drop off. Caught a ton of small mouth, a few largies and a few decent sized rock bass. Most smallies were a pound or less but there were a handful of 2.5 - 3 pounders.

Fished during the day with 6" chartreuse gulp minnows, 2.5" black and white gulp minnows and some chartreuse senkos with black flake. The minnows were definitely the winners of the weekend. The bass were just inhaling them. Had a few nice strikes on the senkos too.

Most of the bigger ones were caught late at night, after midnight. Fished in the dark using top waters. My jitterbug seemed to work very nicely in the moonlight. Fish weren't as plentiful at night but the size was consistently bigger.

The boat was out of commission for the weekend so locations were limited. Wish I could have gotten out to some different spots. I'd definitely love to get out there again. Overall it was a great time. Daytime fishing was awesome even in the peak hours of sunshine. Toss a gulp minnow into the weed beds with a slow retrieve and there was a strike every few casts. Night time top water action was great too. Didn't try top water during the day only because the minnows were working so well but by the sounds of the splashes I was getting at night it would have been exciting to see.

Can't wait to go back. Some of the most fun fishing I've done all summer!

They both were awesome. Started out with the chartreuse and it was going well and when things started to slow down a bit I switched to the smaller black and whites to get things heated up a bit. My buddy kept going with the chartreuse and both were producing. The black and whites may have worked a bit better just because the fish were smaller. The water was so clear though and we were just watching the fish attack them and suck them up from tail to head.

Thanks for the reply! Must have been cool seeing the lure get hit!
