if you like to fish stoneflies but cant tie, or you you buddy is banging them and wont cough up a fly for you, try these

berkely nymph

they come in a few colours and dont take up too much room. you can pull off the parts you dont like to change it a bit.

Or you could just go to a local fly shop and get real nymphs.. We hit about 15 on real bead head nymphs yesterday.. Do those Berkeley ones come in bead head....lol

Some of us may not have a "local" fly shop, and that can be expensive when youre losing a few everyday. for five bucks you get a dozen power nymphs. to make them a bead head i just clip on a 6b shot above it, or up my hook a size. dont get me wrong i drift flies a lot, but these can be a good backup and are easily obtainable.

Maybe I'll pick up a pack and try them out, after all, it's good to be versatile. I bet they do work but I still prefer my reel flies since I know they work well, I hooked 25 steelhead all on flies last Sunday.. Another Great day on the water.

I've used those Berkleys with minimal success, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I purchased the orange brown colored ones.

knuguy- i get them at Can tire for around $5 a dozen
dozer- a lot the time i try new stuff on days that are already slow so that isnt a fair test. i dont really use them as a "go to " bait, moreso a backup if flies are producing and a forgot my flybox or something. colours that have worked for me are the brown, green, the one with a bright chartreuse side, and the pink ones. if the trout wont have them, save them for panfish with the kids. they are awesome for that and no worms!

for those without a fly shop in their area, these were all purchased at canadian tire aswell. the egg pattern and the egg sucking leech are tied on stonger hooks and they are labelled "salmon/steelhead", but the others are ok as long as you dont put the boots to them too hard. they are all 2.99 for two. they are not the highest quality, but are a lot better than nothing.

graham, can you recommend a place to buy flies in the GTA? i saw some nice one at lebarons, i think they are made by "superfly"?

I think most tackle shops sell flies, I'm surprised Canadian Tire sells flies like those, that's impressive.. Try Wilson's fly shop in Toronto for a good selection of flies, also Angling Specialties or With a Fly shop in Mississauga.

do you carry the fine sharpner and clean the hook all the time?
one of my friend mentioned before when he use flies. he always do and keep it sharp enough for easier hook set.

I have had small flies that I have tied in my box for years that are all mangy ,and slightly rusted that in a pinch I have used and hooked up.However if the flies are larger they do not penetrate as well as small (#10-#18) and should be as sharp as you can get.Wilson's fly shop is also in the Fergus area if you are around there.

I dont always sharpen my hooks but I use high quality hooks to start with. If I snag or feel the hooks are dull I will sharpen them. I think your hook percentage is much higher with sharper hooks, not just because of a better hook set but I think in some cases fish will spit out a fly quickly and a super sharp hook will hook some fish before you even hook set the the hook.

If you ask any good nymph angler they will tell you they will miss fish nymphing, especially with a float or indicator because of slack line and the fact it only takes seconds for some fish to spit a hook out. So the sharper the hook the better your chances.

I bet you they work, just like powerbait pink worms do. When trout turns it on and your offering drifts perfectly on the strike zone, it won't matter if it's roe, bead, yarn, plastic worm or fly. You can tie the best bead, roe or fly at the end of your line if it's not where the fish want to feed. it won't matter either.
