Gouged rod guide repair

I managed to get a gouge in a rod guide. Is there a tried and tested method that anybody has to repair it? I want to ask those who know what they are doing before I steel the old lady's nail polish and files to try and refinish it that way.

It does resemble a groove. I believe the guide is titanium carbide. The style of guide escapes me, so let's just call it the thick, black variety found on trout rods. When my line goes over the shallow groove, it catches ever so slightly, making a clicking sound.

Edit: on closer inspection, it looks cracked. Shoot!

I can repair it pretty easy. I have an abundance of guides and thread for tying rods. I grew up tying fishing rods with my old man. It was his hobby but i quickly learned by hanging out in his workshop as a kid growing up. Next time im in Oakville fishing I can probably bring the supplies and replace the guide for you. If you can shoot a pic of the guide so i can match it properly

Hey Bass

Did you drop or hit the guide? They are very hard and brittle. If there is something or place that you are storing your rod, or even handling, where it's not protected a replacement guide will crack again. Hope it's just bad one from the manufacturer.

Ridx that's awesome of you to fix it. Where do you get the ceramic guides without the metal supports? Angler_Brazil has a broken first guide. He leaned it against the sink and said it just tipped and hit the floor and the guide shattered into a million pieces. I'm sure he'll appreciate any help. I'll let him know or if you wanted to pm him. Thanks.

Not sur about that style of guide grubman. I have a few plastic cases full of different guides. as well as about 200-300 broken fishing rods for replacement guides/parts. Some of it quality stuff and some not. My great uncle has a tackle shop in Owen Sound. Fletcher Sports. Used to be in Acton. Most of the stuff I have was taken from my fathers workshop after he passed. he would go up to see our uncle and bring home piles of rods and reels that needed repairs and would repair them and have yard sales and sell em. He used to make some good cash on the weekends doing this. He would then take the trip back up to Owen Sound and give our uncle some money and get more stuff. Over the years he accumulated a pile of extra guides/rod sections. And me always wanting to hang out with my old man picked up on rod buiding over the years. As soon as i get some more rod winding epoxy im going to build a couple spinning rods for myself for next year. When i do ill post up some pics of the process.

I can say with the most confidence that it was my butterfingers that likely cracked the guide. At fist I thought maybe I did it in with cheap braided line, but given that the fissure goes all way around, it was likely from one of the tumbles the pole took -- especially since it is the second guide from the reel that has the crack because I'm sure it would be the guide that would take the fall It just surprises me that a material named "titanium carbide" is that brittle! Sounds like something air frames would be made of lol.
