grand/caledonia?

is the grand at caledonia fishable this time of year or does it freeze up?
Oh it's fishable, SSShhh. LMAO. The current is far to strong for the water to freeze unless we hit about - 60. There is some ice close to shore where the water is not moving fast. You can get in there. Chrome is in there. Eyes are still hitting as are the pike and surprisingly to me the Cats. I also got a Bowfin about 5 lbs yesterday. Be careful if you are wading like we were the current is strong and dress warm, lot's of thermals. I had 3 layers of long johns on and was a bit chilly but it was -16 with wind chill. Read the regs carefully as the Grand has a lot of special regs.
We don't fish at the dam in Caledonia, we have a spot downstream, but the water below the dam is definitely wide open.

hmm i don't fish often there but i'm sure i heard that place is closed to fishin until april. maybee nado can fill in hes seem to fish that way often enough.

Posted that at the same time lol, I was pretty sure that it was closed and I looked it up and its closed Dec 31

thanks only been there once before in november, wasn't sure if it was fishable or closed this time of year.someone on another forum called me a poacher just because i was asking a question about the grand/caledonia. easy body.if it's closed i'm not going.

Yes Chrome is closed there as is Bass. I didn't know where my copy of the regulations was the other day as I moved recently, but found it today. Both Pike and Walleye are open until Mar 31 and Mar 15 respectively. We often cross the Grand in Caledonia on our way to work and see people below the dam all winter. The water stays open under the dam all winter, but use care as the current there can be very strong and of course the shore would be slippery.

and that's why that site sucks to many smart ***** jump to conclusions. People get ripped apart on that site, best not to post anything u will only get praise if u own a CTS rod LOL.

I was driving by the dam the other day and saw a guy fishing so I stopped and I was goin to give him a talking to. I walked up to him and asked him what he was fishing for and he said pike/walleye and I was like oh...right...I guess I forgot there were other fish in this river lol. Some people dont even fish for steelhead so we shouldnt be so quick to jump to conclusions.

I fish the Grand quite a bit and you could literally fish it every day of the year, but at this time of year it can be dangerous. I doubt I will be back there this year until the end of April.
There are so many fish there that have no closed season and some of them can reach a good size and give you quite a fight on medium tackle. Channel Cats, Gar, Bowfin, Suckers and Carp, not to mention all the panfish.
I have discovered that in a previous post I was incorrect about when Walleye and Pike close there. After going over the regs with a magnifying glass it turns out that they both close the end of Feb.
Anyway as I keep stressing, if you do go there be careful, there is a lot of fast water there.

Wow, I just checked that out. Those guys are harsh. I guess they can't see the other fish for all the Chrome in there. And I guess all of us who fish there from June to Sept. are just wasting our time as the water must be fishless those months ( no Steelies ). Funny thing is my method of fishing the Grand is float fishing for all species, I just use a minnow as my bait rather than roe or roe imitations. Pike, Bass, Cats and Walleye can be a lot of fun on a float rod with a center pin reel.
I tried to register so I could add my 2 cents, but my email address was declared invalid. I guess they could tell I was going to stir up some poop. Gotta go, I have new email :)
