if you ever go to bala, a small town in muskoka, then you will have to know this technique. go to the public dock on the moon river and use a floresent green jig with a worm. If this doesn't catch you a pike then it will probably catch alot of rock bass. keep these alive and then take them with you out to the middle of the river where you can see weeds touching the surface. anchor your boat so it doesn't drift and then take a three to four inch hook and stick it through the area where the tail conects to the body. take a bobber the size of your fist and stik it on the line about ten feet away from the fish (do not use a slip bobber) the pike that inhabit the weeds will see the rock bass just above the rocks and will eat it. the pike will run with the fish ,then stop and turn it to swallow, when it starts to move again set the hook. you will have better luck on a windy day. i have caught some small pike using this trick and have been with someone while they caught a forty-five pound muskie.

hey balapickerel,
i used to actually frequent that spot that youre talking about last year . how has it been this year? this year ive only went tehre a couple of times, and pretty much caught nothing.

this year for some reason even during late june, the water from the bala falls didnt even die down, and then Smallies nearly disappeared. but anyways, thanks for sharing. that actually happened to me twice. i watched the pike take my rock bass and my 8 pound mono with it.

i haven't been there lately and i regret it. the town is putting in a new hydro dam at the falls and it's going to disrupt the breeding of the baitfish in the river so the pike won't get as big

that sucks, i was really looking forward to going there maybe one lasts time this year. and i wanted to ask, have you been getting into any walleye near the bala falls this year? i remember one year there was this huge storm that seemed to get the water all turbulent at the docks and we pulled out HUGE walleye from there.

this year, its just not turbulent, but its got a flow to it that i;ve never seen in the last few years.

you might still get to go there. the dam is not being put in till at least next year. as for the walleye they're more active in the spring. you know the public boat launch just down river. there are rapids from hydro dam there. go to the dock at the public boat launch and cast out some spinners right when the snow is melting. i was talking to a guy who knew my grandfather this july and he said that one evening last spring he cast out four times and reeled in three walleye. two of them were seven lbs and the other was ten. :)
ps the spot i just wrote about is where the walleye spawn so they won't be affected

i'm going to the walleye spot in bala this weekend and i was wondering what sort of lures are good for walleye

i'd have to say soft plastic minnow in white at night and natural colours during the day. or try crankbaits, no clue what colour though i'd guess use natural colours because i dont ever remmeber catching fish with oranges and yellows up in that area.

WARNING...
it is illegal to use rockbass as bait...
not trying to be mean or anything, but i had to say it. you could get fined if a CO saw that or if someone reports you.

The OMNR provides a list of permitted baitfish species to be used in Ontario. It is illegal to use any gamefish as bait.

i doubt that any one would report me, everyone in town does it. by the way the walleye spot is where the world record for walleye was cauhgt. it was 107 centimeters in lenght and was twenty three pound nine ounces

if you come by a book called up north it has the record in there. it's under the catagorie of pickerel but walleye and pickerel are the same fish so it shouldn't matter
