Hey everyone,

I'm realively new at fishing and I'm looking to learn as much as I can and build up my fishing knowledge. I don't have any fishing friends so I'm glad to have found a place where I can chat about fishing. I've been fishing in the Port Credit area and a couple of times in Brantford. I'm still looking for some good fishing spots within an hour of Port Credit.

fish port credit itself! Salmon should start staging mid-later august. Temps have been cooler than normal this august.

Welcome jimcan.
Agreed with fishing89. Lots of good fishing will so be available at the mouth of a certain western trib near you ;) .
Not sure about accessability any more without a canoe or something, but you should be able to find a few Pike, Bass, Cats and Carp from the harbor up past the QEW.

Alfie.

Thanks for the greeting. I've been mainly fishing for Pike down here, When I head out west to the Brantford area, I'm fishing for bass and pike. So far I've been spin casting with top-water crankbaits. I've gotten a couple of bites but I haven't had any luck pulling anything in. In fact a pike took one of my top-water lures from me tonight when my line snapped.

Which bring me to a question about fishing line. Are mono lines good enough for fishing pike and bass, or should I spend the extra for braided line? What pound line would be recommended?

Thanks in advance.

For pike you should use a steel leader.

Don't sport your braid, use mono... :D

Really it's all personal preference, I am a mono guy because that is what I learned on, so I am accustomed to it. Experiment and choose which line is best for you. For example, clear water, for me, equals mono or fluorocarbon. I can get away with braid in a dirty water situation, but I will still probably put a clear leader because braid does not "vanish" under water. If you are a beginner I would highly recommend mono.

I agree with fisher12 and buck, steel leaders are very important for Pike. But this conversation reminds me of something that happened over 30 years ago.
Dad and I were on our way to fly in to a lake near Elliot Lake for Pike. We made our usual stop at Epps near Orillia to pick up bait and gear. We each bought a few packets of steel leaders. After we flew in we started losing Pike, bringing in only broken leaders. Further examination revealed that where the leaders were looped back on themselves they were only attached by lacquer or something, we could open these loops with our finger-nails, no wonder the Pike were getting off. Being 150 miles from civilization for the next 10 days we had no choice but to tie directly to our mono, 10 or 12 lb I believe. We landed Pike and lots including a large of about 17 lbs and lost surprisingly few.
I do still recommend a steel leader, but in a pinch you can still get them :) .
No knock on Ellwood Epps either, over 40 years and a satisfied customer.

Alfie.
