Has anybody succesfuly fished the ganaraska river between the the C.N.R. and Lake Ontario?

I know I shouldn't mention the name of places, but this is a extremely well known location with a huge fishing pressure.
I went today and I tried to fly fish it without any succes. Nevertheles, I saw other fishermen, using bait, that caught some reaaally nice steelheads.
I don't know if it is possible to fish with flies this site. It would be interesting since it is open all year round and has trophy trouts.

I don't see fly fishing a great way to target them in the trench. It's too deep and can't get down fast enough.

Unless you really weigh down your righ and use the chuck n duck method.

the only way you could fly fish that section is with a sinking line, and then trying to chuck a line out far enough is another challenge

I've never fished there but there isn't much water that can't be covered with a fly rod if you have the right technique, rod, and line combo. Apache is onto it, or better yet a 13' rod should easily cover any distance you need to fish at.

Well, for whay I've seen, the fishermen using bait just cast 15 or 20 feet away and they use bobbers with a few feet of line under them. So the distance and the depth shouldn't be a problem.

Instead of working the trench or channel, why not try heading out more towards the lake along the break wall and using a sinking line, fish streamers preferably big bait fish imitating streamers...Karl Weixlmann in his book on great lakes steelhead fly fishing dedicates a chapter on fishing the beaches/mouths of river and even into the big water just off shore.

You would need the right equipment to do it but its possible, also chuck and duck would be an acceptable nymphing technique for this area.

I actually tried to fish it from the break wall because the river was pretty muddy due to the high temperatures. There, the other fishermen casting to Lake side, where the water was clear, had some bites. I'll keep trying whenever I can and if I have any success I'll definitely let you know.

I fish the lower parts of rivers and river mouths of huron with a fly rod using baitfish patterns and leeches and have had success. I mainly fish these areas when fish are starting to stage, but anytime the fish are running is good. Try different techniques, crawl your leeches when the water is cold, and strip aggressively if the fish are active.

Yup, off break wall into lake will get you into some fish. Also the nother side ( opposite the rocky breakwall); the concrete pier thing. You can do it buddy
