Hi,

With all the talk about fly fishing lately, I'm feeling the itch to buy another outfit.

Currently I have 8' 4wt and a 9' 6wt, but looking to get a another setup for winter chromes.

Not looking to spend too much money on this. Generally what rod length/weight should I get for winter chromes? I'm looking to mainly stay in the east with the occasional west trips.

1) 9' 7/8wt rod
2) 10' 7wt rod
3) 11' 5/6wt rod
4) 11' 6/7wt rod
5) Just stick with my 9' 6wt

Thanks for the help OFF.

the 10 foot 7 wt is a good choice but i will say two hand rods are alot of fun but not knowing what the eastern tribs are like i dont know if its worth it

id go for the 10 foot 7 wt whats your price range

Ideally $0, I was hoping that somebody would say "stick with 9ft 6wt" lol.

Not sure what my real budget is at the moment. I just know I don't want to be spending too much as I've already spend way more than I want to this year. This itch sucks...

I do most of my winter steelheading with a bomb-proof 9.5' 6wt Scott and Bauer reel...

lol, maybe I just need a higher paying job.

After reading many threads on this topic, I heard that the extra 6inches make a huge difference when using a 6wt for steelhead. Is this true?

yes and no your rod will work for sure and work well the extra length just adds alittle more shock cushioning when fighting a fish

Depends what you need the six inches for...

Truth brother, I picked up an 11.5 switch Sage Z-axis for getting out to small runs and pockets for high sticking with a nymph...1-1.5 feet certainly makes a practical difference.

I guess I can stick with my 9ft 6wt for now and wait a month for new years to buy a new outfit.. This way I won't feel that bad for spending MORE money in 2012 on fishing lol. Unless I find a cheap second-hand 10ft 7wt that I just can't resist...

Haha, must be nice to be able to spend that amount of money on a rod.

At this stage in my life I'm just not fit for that. Just finished college and started a job not too long ago. ONE DAYYYYYY, I'll be able to buy the gears I want. But for now, must train my mind to think towards a cheaper alternative to satisfied my itch.. Maybe I should sell some of my bass equipment. lol

Slowly, but surely, my mindset is changing to that. Bass used to be a weekly thing for me, until I picked up a fly rod.. I've only been bass fishing in open water a hand full of time this past summer.

a 2 hand rod on eastern runs is not needed on most of em, only a couple of rivers come to mind in lower ontario, places like the lower sauble, notty, an grand they would be useful but for the most part, is only a 20ft shot from one side to the other easily done with a roll cast

but back on topic a 10ft 7wt would be a great length/wt
