Hello all,

I am new to fresh water fishing. Grew up on the Pacific. I am enjoying this fresh water stuff - just need to get out on a boat!

So I went to an infamous river yesterday... swam a bit for my kit.

Very beautiful but lots of garbage from fisherman - broken rods, lure packs, old line... That was a disappointment.

I stopped in at the Dam - No, you can't fish there. They wanted to sell me yet another permit for $40. WTF?

I visited the local OPP detachment for info. They suggested to pull off the side of a road where the river winds beneath a bridge and make your way down to fish. I was curious about the MInistry Fish guy - they replied there is only one guy patrolling so unless you are fishing from your car on the side of the road - he's really not gonna stop. But that said - if there are loads of cars near a bridge then he will more than likely pay a visit.

Use your judgement (common sense), be responsible, respect the area, respect the species, clean up after yourself - don't litter and have fun!

I met a few locals who said the fish weren't biting yesterday so they were heading way down stream. They figured it was the lack of rain - well boys - its raining today!

All n All - I would go back to that River and try again - it is absolutely beautiful!

I look forward to meeting some people to fish with.

Welcome Gnu, I too spend a fair bit of time on that river but have had little luck on it. I keep being told to wait a bit longer.

Yes that section has it own permit over and above the Ministry Lic. I agree it is BS and will fish above or below that zone.

Also be aware of the no kill zone. Catch and release and barbless hooks only

I fish that zone with out there park use permit let them try to charge me with it you can't single out one group for use of a park and that's all it's for is there parks there 3 of them I think for one the opp can not enforce this its up to there bylaw and of they do try to ticket me its off to court I go I know the trespass property act better then most by law officers but that's me I don't recommend doing what I'm doing but I find it crap that area is trying to get people pay to fish all it is a cash grab for the township ok rant down lol

No barbless just c and r in that area for rainbow trout/steelhead only. Other species is regular retention limits. Essa permit only applies to the town fishing parks. Most land is private property so take care not to tresspass

Thanks for the added information. As it was Essa Twp I did not realize it was there parks only. Good to know
