Help picking out new rod and reel

I wouldn't buy anything with the BPS logo, browning or anything else BPS makes under licensing.
Whats up with all these huge salmon and pike rods? 6'6, medium, 2-piece, put it in the trunk and up to the cottage for some perch, wallye and bass. It will play a small pike off the bluffs too. Even small browns.
Why is that? have you used them? Do you have any experience with them? For the money you get a lot of rod. Show me any other rod with the same materials and technology at that price. Don't get me wrong I am in no way a BP fan boy, but it is a good rod for the price. There are numerous reviews on it both personnel and magazines and it always gets good reviews.

Their casting rods aren't too bad (too fast for my liking but not too bad), but I don't like their spinning rods, junk IMO.

I am glad you asked because yes. Yes, I have fished both a BPS branded rod and several Browning rods, which BPS manufactures under license. They are fine for amateur hour, but they do not even rank entry level as far as quality goes. No offense if that is what you are fishing. I am sure they serve you well.

Take those reviews with a grain of salt. Magazines are paid by tackle companies to review products and the average user review on the BPS website is posted by people who don't know any better.

Anyways, don't take it so hard. Not everybody will agree with you. I'm actually surprised you went out of your way to research the most fiscally responsible equipment for him... that is a very classy act and i am sure he is indebted to you.

Not all, but some are very good quality. One such rod that comes in mind is the Bionic Blade. For a $70 rod, that thing is pretty sensitive and EXTREMELY durable.

No worries, I am only trying to make a suggestion to the OP, as I am sure you will eventually.

Cheers.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I think I'll be going to the sport show next weekend so I will take a look at some stuff then.

The girlfriend informed me she would try fishing too so it looks like I will need another reel after all. So that stradic is just calling my name again, and I could let her use the Sahara.

So I was thinking grab a stradic ci4 3000 and fill it with 30lb braid with a 10lb fluoro leader as I use soft plastics a lot. Which I'm sure will let me feel a whole lot more than the mono I was using.

For the rod... I will take a look at the fenwicks and the shimanos suggested, and look for a 6'6" MH

Hello everyone I'm currently looking for a new rod and reel for jigging .

I've been looking at something light weight around 6'.
veritas with a pflueger supreme mgx
Shimano compre with a shimano symetre

Most of my setups are all garcias ,nothing but good things to say about my veritas's that I own .
Just lately I've been leaning towards the shimano setup.

Has anybody fished these combos and how would they perform ?
Let me know what you think .

Thank you

When I first started fishing I bought an ugly stik, spinning rod, I loved it. It is durable, light weight and it will never snap on you. If you check it out some videos on it you can bend the rod with your knee and it won't break. I suggest getting a 6'6 and a 9. I think those rods are perfect for me. I always carry two on me just in case anything happens. The rods are only 40-50 dollars in ranging, very cheap. Also you can grab a reel for about another 40 dollars its called Mitchell Advocat, great reel I have been fishing for years and it has never tangled on me and it is very smooth. You save so much for the perfect equipment. Expensive stuff isn't always better. Your budget would be under 150 dollars for rod and reel, I would say it is the perfect set for me.

Cheers.

Forgot about the clarus rods, definitely check them out too!
yup got a 13' clarus, it put up very well for the salmon and steel i got last fall, very well priced rod and very good bang for the buck! they make an 11' 6" clarus also if im not mistaken,

Hey jwhiteney, your current setup is a fantastic entry level setup that will provide an all around rod and reel combo. I fish very competitively but also on a budget due to the amount of rod and reel combo’s I have on the boat. I’ve always been a fenwick guy but recently I switch over to the Shimano Crucial rods and teamed them up with the Pflueger Supreme series reel. It’s a very nice combo and well balance, I think for your budget you can get 2 of these combos. Hope it helps :)

I don't know If anybody has mentioned Daiwa rods, but they seem pretty solid for the price. I just have a cheap Daiwa Heartland 8'6" Medium action 2 piece. I used it mainly for bass at the start, but I now tend to use it for carp fishing now, So it definitely has the strength to fight the bulk of what'd you be targeting. For $50 I definitely think it's worth it. And I imagine they have better quality rods of that nature as well.

i just got a simax rod a few weeks back, IM10, fuji guides, superlight weight, lifetime warranty, its a med/heavy and has TONS of backbone!! I got it at the bait bucket in barrie, he had them on sale for 55-60 regular prices ranging from 100-150 the one i got has the regular price of 145, amazing rod, is all i can say! I paired it up with a pflueger supreme xt but whatever rod you do end up getting, the stradic ci4 is a great reel and the sahara isn't much worse, i would take a good look at the shimano line or daiwa if you are willing to spend that much for their higher end reels, i myself think it is not worth it and you could get another shimano sahara or a pflueger (i would stay away from the lower end daiwas) pflueger has great customer service, shimano not so much but both make great products.
