Help with fly fishing set up

I was looking into stating to fly fish so a friend of mine game me a GX300 reel. I was wondering what rod would be good for a noobie. I am looking to fish at credit. Also if anyone could suggest a type of fly that would be great. Thank you

Hey sorry it's a 6/7/8. As for what and where I was planning on fishing south of the QEW and possably brook or brown. Anything would be nice I want to mostly work on the cast as I have never done it before and hear that practice is a must

Well what's the top of your budget for a rod and as for flies start off with some wolly buggers mudler Minnow prince nymphs hares ears nymphs copper johns pheasant tail nymphs as for dries elk hair caddis and blue winged olives are great go to flies

Well I can go to around 200 on the rod give or take a few bucks. Thanks I will go and grab the flies you said.

Would that rod also work as a steelhead and salmon rod?

It can be used for steelhead but way to light for a salmon rod your looking at an 8 wt for that 6 wt is a great rod to learn on not to heavy not to light it is a good deal for the rod

agree with mad---great all around rod--you can pull anything up to like 4-5 lbs with it--salmon no....

Neto...it's a fast rod but I use one also...a great deal for a well finished rod. Load it with 7wt line though.

There is a Rio textured selective trout line which shoots really well...pricey though...

Or a standby is the SA Mastery GPX...great line + hard coating (though I wouldn't recommend, like I have done, keeping a line on the reel for 8+ yrs as I have with my GPX...though still performs surprisingly well).

I think im probably gonna try a cheaper line to practice with then when I get the hang of it ill move on to the big boys line. don't want to be casting out dollar bills lol
