Hi,

I'm planning on purchasing the below for fishing for Salmon/Steelhead off piers, and perhaps rivers/streams/creeks later:

Rod:

Ugly stik BWS 110090; 9'; Medium

Reel:

Size 60; 4:6:1; 17lb/230 yds

This is a saltwater rod and reel combo. I understand that saltwater reels can be used for freshwater fishing.

Any inputs/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Hey:). Umm that's not bad, my friend has A very similar rig but what I find is that the rod is abit heavy and with that reel you will feel if in your wrists after 10 casts. What I had picked up was the rapala rsc rod in 9ft. It was designed for chucking lures out at steelhead and salmon. I have not encountered any problems with it yet and for 55$ you can I wrong. It's a great value over all and as for the reel I have a Abu Garcia ossa s40. I have more than enough braid spooled. This is my personal opinion then again I'm also new at pier fishing :) good luck

Devin

I just picked up a rapala 9' Rsc myself but went with a Pflueger reel. That ugly stick combo seemed way to heavy for my liking but for 49.99 you can't go wrong if you don't mind the weight. But just like the other poster I'm new to this so I may be wrong with my choice. Also I might add I do heavy manual labour for a living consistently throwing 60-100 lbs and when I tried out that combo the weight was getting to me

Devin, Erik:

Thanks for your input!

Considering that the Ugly Stik combo would be heavy on the arms, while the lower gear ratio reel would be cumbersome to the wrists, I am going to pickup:

Salmon/Steelhead Spinning Rod:

Fenwick HMX; HMXS90M-2; 9'; Medium; 10-25lb; 3/8 - 1 oz

Reel:

Shimana Saros F; SAR-4000F; 10/200; 5:7:1

This setup, though pricey, should bring years of use and joy!

My two cents
Try and find a shimano 3000 series reel and get yourself a 2500 series spool.
You get the extra capacity for piers with the 3000 series spool and the 2500 series for bass.
I have the stradic just for this purpose.

I got the RSC 8', don't think the store had the 9' version. I got one and was setting the drag inside and it broke about 1' from the tip, Lebaron gave me a replacement for that piece with nor trouble.
The one that I currently have casts good. I have on a Quantum reel 30 size with 12lb line. The specs on the hmx look good for pier casting.

I also have the rapala rsc model 9 ft, that rod has some serious backbone. Looking for a Avid 9 1/2 spinning rod and cannot seem to find one. Might get one custom tied

my rsc says 10-25 lbs. and 3/4 - 3oz. on it. When I checked the specifications online it was totally different for the same model of the rod. I'm wondering if the rod is actually capable of the specs stated on it or is it a misprint?

Ultimately, I ended up getting at Le Baron:

Rod:

Fenwick Canadian Methods Series CMSS902M; 9'; Medium; 10-25lb; 3/8oz (Steelhead spinning)

Reel:

Shimano Stradic FJ; ST4000FJ; 8/240 10/200 12/160; 6:2:1

Neither did they have the Fenwick (HMXS90M-2) nor the Shimano reel (Shimana Saros F; SAR-4000F) that I was hoping to purchase. The intriguing part is that the Fenwick Canadian Methods rod is 10-25lb line capable but is imprinted with only 3/8 as lure weight. I assume, and was informed by the salesperson, that the rod should be capable of casting a 3/4-1 oz lure with a 10-25lb line capacity. I've emailed Fenwick for info as there is no info on this rod on their site or the Internet. Anybody with insight is welcome to share it.
