I have been considering using a larger diameter PVC pipe for some time now, I have no real expirence with using PVC but seems like it would be all but too simple to make a rod holder using a pipe, a stationed fitting and removable top.

The reason I am looking into making one, is I dont want to have to store and use 4 different holders for each rod. I want to have my river set ups in one long tube, a shorter tube with the lake stuff, and my salt water riggs are all down south anyways.

My questions would be while in the tubes, I realize the rods need some kind of protection or insulation for the guides as well the tip would need to be protected. Is this something anyone on the boards has tried? This can either be strapped to my roofrack or sit on the floor in our van, space really isnt an issue.

Anyone have thoughts on this?>

P.s I do realize there are rod holders for 2 rods but they are like $90 each, PVC is $20 or less.

You can pick up all the fittings you need at Home Depot or Lowes but I would think the ABS pipe would need to be schedule 80 4" diameter ,and if you had either a old fleece throw blanket or flannel sheet it could be used to wrap the rods for protection.
If you need to mount straps to the tube then I would think using pop rivets would give a flush finish to the inside to minimize any catching of the rods guides or flannel etc.
Cheers

I recently received a rod in a home made tube and the the rod was wrapped with bubble wrap to protect it while in the hands of Canada Post.

I had a brainstorm one day that's right up your alley man. Pool noodles. Slice them
open they have hollow cores. You can mark and hollow out different sized pockets to hold your guides securely. Then secure the noodle around the rod with rope or heavy duty elastic bands (broccoli bands). They also make a light weight floating rod case for canoe trips.

interesting idea, I think it would be pretty easy to do, the tricky part to figure out is how to insulate the inside of the pipe, aside from that it seems pretty simple, here are some rod holders I made out of PVC for ice fishing, they work great but you have to shove a sock or paper towel in the tube to keep the rod from moving around inside the tube while fishing

Good suggestions here. Great topic. I'm trying to brainstorm ideas as well...My untested idea:

-Cut the pvc in half (vertically)

-Glue quilting to the insides of each half

-Glue and caulk the halves back together

-screw on lids

Was thinking the same thing, the tough part now is cutting the pvc vertically, you won't be able to do it with a hacksaw or sawzall(might be able to if you're really really good) ,you'll need a circ saw or better yet a table saw.

and anybody have any ideas for the lids?

Hum good call dude. I was thinking of using the skill saw but I'm not very skilled with it lol so I guess it might be a trial and error thing.a table saw would be ideal but I don't have access to one...

I ended up giving this a shot last night, I must say ALOT easier than I thought. Cut a 4" Diameter pipe to 80" long. The bottom I used a 4" cap but I insulated it with some foam. I adhered this with the PVC cement. the top end of the "case" I used a 4" screw fiting and cap. The cap screws on I only fastened it hand tight.

For the time being, I am going to use a balled up sock and the bottom, middle and top to avoid having the rods move. It does fit 4 rods in there with some space to spare. We will see how it goes this weekend.

I am thinking to drill out holes every 18" or so and have 4 of them so that I will be able to use a suede cord or something soft to make an "X" inside the pipe which I am sure will be enough to hold the rods..... To cut 80" of pipe and then re-attach it would be pain steakingly time consuming I am sure. I am thinking to measure the inside of the pipe and cut a long roll of material, this will be done for later in spring for now this will do.

That sounds like a great idea man. I think you're on to something with drilling the holes...you could use the openings to apply adhesive to the inside of the pipe when you're laying your foam down. I think I might steal your idea but caulk up the holes once the foam is laid so that the beast still floats...

Hmmm, with the foam, would a buttery fly clip work, I am assuming too tight and foat would crack, too loose and foam would shift and crack....

Awesome ideas everyone. I think you can rent a table saw from Home Depot, or get them to cut it... not too sure though.

Home depot, wont cut PVC for you at all. At least the one in Brampton, they offered me a hand saw and a bench. I took it home and used my tools.

Remy-like i said i have 4 rods I wanna put in this case, for transporting your hand doesnt work from my expirence, with people in the vehicle anas well my 2 year old it just doesnt work. Also these for the warmer months stay in my shed, so its a mulitfacited use IMHO.

nice job man, didn't know they had caps that screw on... for now socks should work fine to keep the rods from bouncing around/damaging themselves in there, and for later I think you have the right idea....that's how I would do it also, I might make one of these when I have some time myself

if you try with a circ saw.. be sure to get a blade for cutting through metal (metal blades cut plastic MUCH better than wood blades, smaller teeth), and make sure its sharp! this will make your life a lot easier, and if you do with a circ saw.. be careful.. its hard to fish with missing fingers.

Draw a line down it and use a jigsaw would be my best advice if you are going to cut it, as apz said metal blade for sure.

Worked out well, I drilled out some smaller slot and was able to attach velcro straps so the rods go in, velcro straps go over, tighten and fasten to the outside of the case. All in all, project costed me $28 after taxes. took about 1 hour to make.

The fittings that screw on, there is a sleeve that sits on the end of the pipe that has the tread in it, the cap screws into that. Super handy and even comes with a rubber gaskets for a waterproof seal (great if you wanted to ensure this will float)

I am not the best at taken pics, hosting them and then posting them but I will try to get em on here before this weekend.

Thanks for telling me... I thought they might do it, cause they'll cut lumber for you.

I thought the same, the guy was very short in saying that is a wood saw and can only cut wood.
