Hot spots on the Grand and Lakes in the Kitchener Waterloo Area?

Hey Guys,

I am just your average catch and release Fisherman. Whats good in the KW area from the shoreline? (Grand River / nearby lakes)



I am new to the forum and Kitchener/Waterloo area. I was hoping I might find some experienced anglers in the area, willing to point me in the right direction. I have done some trekking through the bush and despite my persistence, my footwork has not yet paid off.

So far I have tried various spots on the Grand (St.Jacobs and Downtown Kitchener), Puslinch Lake, Shades Mills, Laurel Creek and two little ponds/ under the Bridge on Victoria Street North. I have also walked through the river with my waders in various spots. I have tried spinners, spoons, lures (Rapalas and Crank Baits) and live bait where permitted. My regular "go to" tactics for up North don't seem to be cutting it, any suggestions? Hoping to hunt down a few good spots close by for Pike, Bass, Crappy, maybe even the odd Pikerel or Trout.

I've caught some nice fish in many of those spots, perhaps you just need to spend a little more time at fewer spots to figure them out better.

Still a little bit of time before bass opens up in zone 16, and the bass fishing should be great once it does. Fishing tends to really heat up in July through to end of summer. This isn't exactly peak time yet. Early fall is also fantastic for those spots, as the fish feed voraciously.

I might be wrong, but something tells me you are using lures that are too large. I would try something small, slow and close to the bottom - at least until the water is a bit warmer.

I too am new to the are tho I don't live in kw I'm from a neighbouring small town wellesley just wondering what might be available to catch in the nith in that direction I landed a solid 30 inch walleye the other approx 8-9 pounds and herd its been decent for pike and bass just no action I have tried several lures spoons cranks twisters along sith different sizes my walleye was caught on a orange/yellow/green spinner I'm pretty sure it was 1/4oz and prolly a foot or so from the bottom

thanks for the advice ill give it a try maybe ill just bring my small twister/jig tackle box and utilize that and see what I can come out with... tho I have tried them a few times just got tired of hitting snags and also tried a jig head with a small white twister on a bobber jigging about 3 feet down

this is the walleye I landed a couple weeks back didn't put up much of a fight ither but still was a nice catch and bit of a relief to know im not fishing a dry spot

If you are looking for bass, a good spot to go is where the grand and speed river meet behind the Preston auditorium. A friend of mine and I would get in the speed river at the beer store in Preston and walk through the river until we got to that area. It was always a good day out. There are a few holes in that area. I always use ultra light rod and reel (so much fun) and either small panther Martin spinners or small tube jigs. The fish aren't monsters but they sure are fun.

Tried the spot behind the beer store last Sunday. Water was a little high and faster than I've seen it previously. Never fished there before but have always seen it driving by or walking the trail. Got in with insulated waders and managed two decent sized perch on a small chartreuse spinner. Not bad for a Sunday at the end of January.
