HOW DO YOU GUYS AVOID RED ANTS WHEN FISHING?

Wear waders, else dont fish there. move to a spot without ant nests. Those things are crazy, no bug spray will stop them

I used to spray 1/3 vinegar 1/3 water 1/3 chilly powder solution on my shoes when i go fish in potential fire ant areas. Its effective as long as you spray VERY frequently.

Now i just don't go. Its a pain in the ass to keep spraying, and I dont enjoy the smell anymore than the ants do.

Tommy Thompson is known for them, especially around the inner ponds. Fire ants do block off some nice shore spots, but its just too much of a hassle to deal with them.

ive been right beside colonies without any problems. the best thing is to be alert. they only emerge aggressively if their nest is disturbed otherwise they just go on their way doing their own thing.

the problem is people crashing through bush and stomping all near the mounds, thatll piss them off for sure. once they are in that alarm mode there no point trying to stay anywhere within a few meters of the nest as their instinct is to climb anything vertical nearby and bite once it moves.

the outside tape method mentioned above does work really well but you need to make sure the underside is sealed proper so they are forced to walk on the sticky side. its almost worse if they find a way under the tape as they get stuck under there and repeatedly bite non stop.

as for bug sprays/etc. its not worth the time imo.

several of these nests along one of my lakes and have never had an issue but have seen many people get bitten. guess what they were doing each time :)

waders bro! stand in like .25 ft of water and your golden! this pond that is close to home where i fish for carp is buzzing with ant nest, we would normally sit on a chair with our legs up, then dust the buggers every now and then if theyre making their way up the chairs legs! LOL!!!!

I shore fish a lot and if it's a 6 foot drop off, waders won't do you any good. I've done it at TTP, bluffs & frenchmans. duct tape is all you need.

seems to be a really good idea, freakin ants will have to " stay " in there! LOL!!!!

I don't think they sell it as potent anymore but I've been using my deep woods 95% deet and I've been fishing in sandals lately with no bites.

In Canada we're regulated - I think the percentage must sit below 30%. Stateside you can buy 100% DEET in most states.

As for the ants - stand in the water.

i wear sandals and shorts ( as anyone who's seen me knows  ) so i can stand in the water, you don't even have to be deep just tip the water starts touching your foot. I've never had a problem with ants
