How do you know where it is ok to fish versus where it isn't - Are there signs?

For example, I want to fish the river near my house, but I can't find any particular rules or regulations about it - does that mean it is ok? It is in public park land I do know that. I've checked the guide that MNR puts out and it says nothing about this area except about limits. There are no signs that I have found saying "no fishing", but I also haven't seen any other people fishing, so what do you usually do when find a new fishing spot to make sure it is legal to fish there?

Sorry if this is a really obvious question, but I don't want to do anything wrong that may get me in trouble and my license taken or something.

Cheers,

Call MNR. Most parks usually have signs of what species are in the pond. Scout it out. Google it. Ask around. If that pond happens to connect to a river. there will be fish.

Check the regs for the area, make sure you look under the exceptions and special regs for the river you want to fish. If it is public land and nothing is posted and the fish there are in season you should be good to go. Most sanctuaries in southern On will have some sort of posting. If you are still uncertain then do as rich suggested and call the MNR.
I get lots of fish where I haven't seen anyone fishing, kind of like having a river to myself or shared with a friend.

Alfie.
