Hey guys, just wanted to ask the comunity how they like to prepare their roe? I usually seperate out each individual egg, throw some borax, brown sugar, and salt into the mix and I'm good to go. Recently I've done some research, while trying out different measurements and various concoctions, I came across the commercial borax mixes. So i said "what the heck, might as well give it a try aswell". I went and picked myself up some "Atlas-Mike's® Shake 'N' Cure for Salmon Eggs" from the Bass Pro Shop. I tried the stuff out, and it produced some good quality roe. apparently it can be frozen up to 1 year. That may be debatable, but the finished product got the job done. Anyway what is everyone's take of commercial brands of roe cure, and how do you personally prepare it in general?

> if anyone is interested in what i purchased, heres the link

I think its all about what your confident with, Im not so sure if the fish thinks about it as much we do. All I do is brine the eggs. Pickling salt and tap water. Works great.

Presention is much more important than the type of cure.

My dad whose been fishing trout for many many years, prob at least 40 years, usually uses borax and maybe a bit of salt. He usually ties the row fresh and freezes them. Me being the noob that I am, this morning he took out a can of roe for me, and instead of patiently waiting for them to thaw, i filled the container with tap water and the roe went whitish. I was told by a guy I met at the creek today that the second tap water touches the eggs, it creates a whiteish film and makes the roe not as good. So note to ppl that don't already know DO NOT run tap water through them, wait for them to thaw in the open.

best thing to do is nothing at all, borax salt ect... all take away natural sent. yes you can keep it for long time, but its not the same...

credit eggs do not work well at all up north, the sent is to different then the spawn from the other fish.. (dirty credit)

Id have to agree with 420, the best way to go is Oh natural.

I agree with 420 I lay eggs out on paper towel. let them dry for a few hours, then wrap them up in some plastic wrap about a days worth in each wrap. They last for ever in the freezer. the trick is to get all the air out of the wrap.

I don't agree on the credit eggs not working up north. I used port hope eggs this morn and hit a whole whack of fish And I have been fishing them all winter. "its all about presentation"

QFT! :)
-I would only use a "cure" if I needed single eggs..

yess presentation is a key to getting the fish, sent is more helpfull when water conditions arent that clear...
if ya master both then your in luck for a good day..

I put them in a salt water bath ( use pickling salt NOT iodonized table salt) for about 15 minutes just to toughen up the outside so they don't pop in the freezer, put 3 tablespoons of eggs in a ziplock sandwich bag, suck out all the air with a straw, wrap bag in tinfoil and freeze, the tinfoil stops freezer burn so the eggs last a very long time

Caught my first hen yesterday and im trying my shot at saving the roe. I First rinsed them off with water and then soaked them in a jar with water and sea salt. Im sure i probably messed them up, but if not what is the next step to take?

Ya i'm pretty sure you DO NOT rinse them in water, because it ruins them I believe. I've always had bad results when I let them touch water, so as for that, stay away from that.
I think for next time, just split the skeen up into smaller pieces and cover them in "borax" , and you should be able to keep them in the freezer for a long time.
Another thing you could do is tie the roe fresh and freeze them for when you need to use them, make sure you bring out the frozen roe a couple days before you need them and then let them unthaw in room temperature. DO NOT run them through water. Just let them unthaw room temp and maybe toss them in the fridge for when you're not using them.

I'm no pro when it comes to roe, i've personally never had to prepare it, my dad usually handles that, but i've payed attention to what he does and we have roe from like 10 years ago probably.

Stole this link from another post on different forum, but I think you all should check it out. Its about the effects of store bought roe cures on the fish that eat it. bad for the fish :-(

Depends on what type of roe you r using.

When I'am dealing with skiened eggs I love to use pro cure. The stuff is unbelievable a so simple to use.

When I'm dealing with loose eggs I river wash the eggs. I fill the bag with river water and let it sit for 3-5 minutes than drain out the water. Than I freeze them in small pill bottles.

If I cure my eggs I use distilled water pickling salt and some brown sugar. I mix the salt and water until I can float an egg, drop in a table spoon of brown sugar. Than I leave the eggs in for the night. I have had eggs in the freezer for over 15 years with no spoilage.

Hopes this is use full to someone out there

I do the same thing. Lol. I found that recipes in an old fishing mag. About seven years ago. I pass it on to whoever ask me how I do my eggs

for loose i use river water like the other guy said 5 to 10 minutes. come home dry them off put them in zip lock bags only the amount i am gonna use for that day. Make sure the air is out u can put some salt if u want. For skein i use that atlas shake and cure my eggs turn into gummy bears when they are done. really good they're not sticky nor popping when u wonna use them deadly in slow moving water

I Just Soak Them In Warm Water(in the bag of course) And Air Dry Afterwards. Strong Enough To Tie A Roe Bag With Them. I Forgot To Throw Salt On Them Before The Freezer And They Kinda Look Shrivelled.
