Thanks to a lot of advice I went out and got a new set up. How does this sound? A Shimano Compre CPS66MH2B 2PC Spinning Rod,Stradic CI4 3000 with power pro braid moss green 30lb test.

yup, sounds perfect to me. Now, to get those wallies to bite...
Next time, consider going a touch lighter on the line. 30lb is over kill IMO. I use 12 - 14lb Fireline, sometimes with a leader, sometimes tipped with fluorocarbon - works pretty good for me.

I agree your set up sounds great. I agree with Joel52 that you should always run a flouro leader on your set up. You cannot break 30 lb. braid if you get snagged and you will catch more fish with a fluro. leader.

the 30 lb is good as long as you are using a fluro leader. I really like strong braid when fishing for bass at the mouths of rocky rivers, anything less than 20lb braid and they break off all day long when they dive under the boulders on the way in. I've never used 30 lb before, it may be a bit overkill but as long as you have the leader its fine.

not to mention if you are fishing with spinners in somewhat dirty water you can usually bend the hook of the spinner back before your line breaks. You end up with really sore hands but at least youre not out $5 for that spinner.

As for the rod breaking that wont happen as long as your drag is set right.

I do use a fluro leader always. Sorry I was just talking about my main set up. I have tried lighter power pro but I did not like it as much. I have a m/h rod. If it can not take that line then everything I have read and been told is wrong about it. I guess I will see soon enough.

depends where you are fishing and the water clarity in my opinion. When i fish the rocky river mouths for bass I prefer a strong 10lb fluro leader (sometimes i just go directly to braid if the water is dirty). In clear water without the massive boulders I go down to my 8lb or the 4 if i have to.

Water clarity and depth are the factors. I'll run 6lb fluoro leaders for wallies and bass, maybe a little stronger or even wire for pike. Trolling for pike I'll use 6-8'' black wire leaders - 15lb. You want something long and tough enough that if you set the hook on the corner of the pike's mouth and it thrashes side to side it won't be able to saw through it with its teeth.

I usually just use braid with no leader when I fish for pike, I only lose about 1/3 fish or less due to line breaking. But I think i get more hookups without the bulky leaders. You can look at it either way i guess, you dont want to lose the trophy fish right when your about to land it and at the same time more hookups can produce bigger fish.
