on a reel, if you were to salmon fish from a pier with 20lb PP? Iv read some people say about 200yd, while others say 100yd, and some say only 80yd.

I have a spinning reel that holds about 130yd of 20lb PP. Would this be likely enough for Lake O salmon runs, or do I must get a larger capacity reel?

It depends of how big is the salmon :) i have seen people got spooled out with 250 yards of line :) so you never know but i usually go with 200-220 yards

ive been spooled with 330 yards and my drag at about 8-10 lbs so your never safe lol but id say in the ball park of 200 yards atleast with 30lb pp your reel would be a bit under gunned, ive used as low as 180 and i could see my spool by the time the fish finally stopped running, you also need to be able to tighten up if you have to

I have alwasy thought in MOSt situation, the more the better. Think about a fish breaking your line with 20 yards out, or fighting a salmon for 30+mins, your line will stretch. after most outting I would say I have lost a minimum of 10 yards between break offs, re-tying and line memory. 5 trips would be 100 yards.

and thats not even if the fish takes off with 50 yards

Yea man, salmon do fight and tend to become peelers. There is a balance to be had though between having enough and having too much line where it becomes uncontrolable. I have seen people spool thier reels to the max, while just standing there, the line apparently begins to unravel itself.

Ok, so for pier salmon, 130yd is way too little.
What about for river salmon? would it be ok for that?

in a river 130 is like 100 too much lol, river salmon dont move too much but ya 130 is perfect for river

I cant find any spinning reel that gives me 250yd capacity with a 20/30lb PP. There are some shimano round baitcasters but my salmon rod is a spinning rod. I dont want to buy another rod if I can help it.

The outside rim of the spool on most(all?) spinning reels are beveled. If you fill beyond the start of the bevel the line will tend to fall off the spool by itself.

Depends on the river. I caught a couple in Aug at the mouth of the Notty. The river is maybe 150m wide at that point. Lot's of room for a salmon to run and, boy, can they run!

Knuguy - You mean there really are fish where you go???? Would really have to see it to believe it...Should i post the picture of the last one you got on that river for all to see???? LOL!

that's at the mouth I mean like let's say 4 clicks up the ganny

the ideal set up for pier fishing salmon would be say a 10ft ML with a 3000-4000 size reel with 20-30lb braid, myself i use a 9'5 light action rod with a 2500 series reel with 200yrds of 15lb braid and 10lb fluoro leader
