Hahaha they're a bit intimidating at first, between their fatness, size, and shear ugliness!

use a glove if you want. Sometimes i'll just put on one gardening glove and use that hand to support the head, or grab it's mouth.
This was the only glove I had last night, Good ol' worms.

Yes my friend, this worked for me last night on the Grand. I got 2 nice Channels, one about 1.5 lbs and one about 4 or 5. Somewhere below Caledonia, hope I can find that spot again.
Didn't have any frozen sardines so I bought the canned type, note, they won't stay on a hook :) So we found worms at the river under rocks.

Alfie.

I think I'd like to get out there and try to catch some cats. I've never hooked one before but I hear they fight like crazy.

Thanks for the helpful info.

A Channel will give you a fight for sure.

I have a question. do you know any spots around durham, clarington, oshawa bowmanville area? I have a spot I would pull in 15+ cats a day,but it has slowed down to getting skunked or just 1 catfish per outing.(corn and worms personal favs, also catfish dough)

note:it was just a pond by lake Ontario (15 ft away) until the city had the pond connected to the lake. then after that I got skunked a lot.(could be cold lake water driving them up to the north side(only accessible by canoe)

Man I've been getting skunked on every bait but night crawlers this year .

Had alot of trouble getting any intrest in the bait I was using at all this year. So I downsized my rig was using 30lb FC leader with a 4/o hook . Baiting with cut bait chicken livers and I even tried Row bags due to friends of mine getting Cat's on row. Scaled down to 10lb mono leader line with a 1/o hook and Canadian night crawlers as they market them in the Good old US of A. Landed a 5lb cat and a 4 lb cat with this attempted to down size quit easly. I'm heaing out today hope I can get some up around the 10lb mark to really test it.....

since ive been getting into trout fishing more lately I have been adapting some techniques such as using lighter lb test lines and leaders as well as using flouro and ive noticed my catch rate has gone up across the board so you are definitely onto something.

This guide has been updated and another one has been added. Read them both for the love of catfish!

Goods tips, I've never caught any channel catfish, only bullheads. Where would be the closest location to Mississauga where I could fish for channel catfish?

Im near the hammer, so i dont really know any locations up your way, but any big pond or medium to large sized river will have them.

Since we are not talking Chrome or Salmon here I guess I can get away with mentioning the Credit River. That Cats are nowhere near where the Salmon and Trout are anyway  . I am lying thru my teeth  .

I would like to add to this conversation that Channel Cats are a top predator, like a Pike or Bass. They are not only found in slow water bottom feeding. I catch them in the Grand all the time in fast moving water while float fishing minnows or worms, hence the name Channel Cat. I also get them in the Trent below the locks, also in fast water.
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the are caught often in turbulent waters in Manitobia too, Redcat?
They will attack minnows or worms as I said, but I have also got them on a Mepps and even a Hula Popper. ( The folks at the bait shop in Caledonia will tell you frogs are deadly for Channels, sorry Noob. But I dont use them as minnows are deadly at a few bucks a dozen.)

No worries Alfie. The shop doesn't sell them, right?
