Ok just wanted to know whats the proper way to hold a pike? giless , inside of its mouth??? because my cousin was fishing and he managed to get a small mouth bass on his line and he was holding it in the water and at the same time a pike came and grabbed it and his hand,it was pretty huge and grab the fish right out of his hand. his fingers were bleeding alot, after seeing that was kinda scared sh%tless to ever try catching one, any advice????

If the fish is too big to "tail" (one hand on tail, the other under its head) I have a cradle I bought for muskie. Havent really used it but it is fairly gentle with the fish.
You can also get a Grip tool. Im not sure what effects on the fish this would have but I think they are pretty safe.

I just grab them from the top behind the head, I used the grip tool and it actually punctured a hole right though its mouth! so I prolly won't use the grip tool again don't think its adjustable will check it out again it was my first time using it. I guess if its a big one the tail and under its head is a good method of course once its tired out;)

yes, I should have mentioned this would be for handling fish a little larger. For the hammer handles I grab em behind the head too.....as far as the grippers go, there are a few different makes, the cheaper ones are like vice grips and yes would prolly hurt the fish. But I think the more expensive ones have a softer grip to them.
So I have been told anyway.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully ill catch one to actually use the techinque after me so called "fear" of em

Would you mind sharing the location/lake where this huge pike bit your cousin's hand? I've seen it happen on one fishing show and on a few youtube clips but would be really cool to experience it first hand;)

Last year a 24" pike almost bit me while unhooking it, its like it knew what it was doing, the fellow fisherman I gave it too had a good meal out of it......

You might also want to get pike mouth spreaders usually sell for $2.99 or so, makes it easier to unhook them I never used them yet but have a pair just in case.

:D ^ Experience it first hand.. Openfire! Call the nice men in the white coats!

Hmm I might have to edit that post, I meant seeing it first hand as in the pike taking a fish thats caught on the line without the pike biting hand experience.

I think it is natural to fear these monsters...they have lived along time, much longer than us, sooo who knows what they are cappable of...I am afraid, I also fear lakes, but that doesnt stop me from getting out there. Just do it!

I think Musky can grow much bigger then Pike, I saw one caught in lake ontario on the US side it was huge can't remember the exact wieght but I think it was over 50#s ppl where saying "get your kids out of the water". the guy caught it on 12# line too! trolling for lake trout!

I've definitly got to do some musky top water fishing this year.

Ya I have yet to catch a muskie on top water myself but I did see some youtube vid's and it looks like an alligator is smasking his bait. They are an extremly powerful fish and being bit by one/or its cousin the pike is not uncommon in certain areas. I had the privlidge of fishing a lake called Kashabag lake, or spelled very similar. I remember seeing signs everywere in the lake, no swimming and on the sign was a person swimming and a big fish underthem. Crazy. I saw some huge fish that were mounted in the lodge and I have always wanted to go back since then.

you should lip them like bass....

...

kidding aside, i would stick with the tail and supporting the belly method.
for larger pike, make sure you always have a horizontal hold. lots of people lift them up vertically and this causes stress to their internal organs due to the pressure of gravity.
