How to make persistent split shot patterns

Hi guys,

Maybe someone can suggest a solution. Briefly - I use 6lb fluoro leader under the float and black bird round split shots. When I create a pattern, I press them fairly hard on the line so that they seem to be resisting an attempt to slide them up or down the line pretty well. But then, once I am out casting my line, after half an hour or so, split shots lose their grip and start sliding down towards the hook so that I need to re-adjust them every other cast. If someone had the same problem and came up with a solution that works (maybe tying knots in front of each shot or else...), would really appreciate to hear your advice.

thx,

mike

usual with fluoro lines, split shots don't stay on well, try using mono line for splitshots and add a fluoro leader at the end.

Hi Mike are you using a swivel? Main line to swivel, the a lead what ever length you need of flourocarbon. I always put my shots above the swivel so if they do slide down they slide and stop at the swivel. Or try using a mono shot line like suggested above mono works much better and is stonger for shots then flourocarbon. I would not suggest tying knots because every knot you tie increases the chance of the line breaking, more often.

Hope it helps.

Thx guys for your input

Yes, I do use a swivel, in my case it looks like this: main line -> float -> swivel -> fluoro leader -> hook, with shots sitting on the leader under the swivel. I guess I am going to give both methods a try and see which one works better for me.

main line -> float -> split shots -> swivel -> fluoro leader -> hook

or

main line -> float -> swivel -> mono line (shot line) with split shots -> swivel -> fluoro leader -> hook

Great explanation Efka, either way works fine, lately I have been using flouro main, with a mono shot line, and I lose less fish due to the bb eating through my flourocarbon and snapping my line. Good luck and happy fishing!

so how close do you guys put the swivel to the hook usually?

It all depends in the conditions really, in clear shallow water youll want a longer leader i run up to 3 1/2 ft, the shortest youll want to go is 18". Generally though a 2ft is the norm.

different river different setup.
you would not use same shotting pattern and leader in wilmot and niagara
12-18" is good enough, unless it's super clear

A funny question I guess, but nonetheless... Speaking of mono shot line - evidently the desired quality here is..... abrasiveness! Since no vendor would ever brag: "Hey, we make the most abrasive mono on the market!", based on your experience which make of mono line is the most abrasive and thus holds bb split shots the best?

Good idea about using mono for a shot line. I had splits shots run down a fluoro line and it'd be so annoying. Will try out this new method out.

sure they brag about it!!
abrasion resistance is very important when choosing line, i would say it's in top list, next would be knot strength and stretching.

okay thanks, yeah i think 12 to 18 inches is good because the deepest pools around and at Erindale Park are pretty low.
How deep are the usual pools you guys fish in the Credit river?

Thx efka,

Just a bit of clarification - in my humble opinion abrasiveness and abrasion resistance is two mutually exclusive characteristics of a fishing line. So, when vendors brag about their makes of line being abrasion resistant they are bragging about them being UNabrasive.

Once again, thx for sharing your expertise on the matter

the main pool i fish is usually pretty clear and deep hence the long leader, plus i find trotting easier with a longer leader.
