i dont go out ice fishing alot, but i have that fishing itch and its killing me; i cant wait till ice out <_< anyone been up there lately? as most of you guys know, the weather went well above 0 on monday and tuesday, hows the ice doing? hoping to do to ice fishing on the weekend if possible :D

Depends on where you want to drill your hole(s) Gilford is about 7" to 9" . 9th line is about 5" BBP is about 3" Snake is about 7" to 8" for whities. Was at Snake today, seemed dead( may be Super Bowl). Rental huts were almost empty and only about 7 portable huts

The ice on lake Simcoe is the best it's been in years and considering the state of the changed climate may be the best for a few years to come, locals are lovin it, it's just like the good ol days

Good news 101. Thanks for the update.

Pro tip #73...When it's the worst blizzard of the decade and takes 2 hours just to cross town and dig thru snow to get ready to go and then you have to puch cops outta the snow before you get on the ice, maybe, just maybe stay home and play with your gear...

oh it was loads of fun...so much fun that I never want to have fun like that again! lol...didn't help that I was corrupted the night before by a woman with big jugs of wine! ...we probably would have cancelled and bailed but we knew NADO was coming a long way through an epic storm that we haven't seen the likes of in a long long time so we felt that we should just suck it up and go for it...the snow is pushing down on the ice so much all the huts were sitting in puddles a couple inches deep from water coming up through the holes...the drifts out there were knee deep and the bigger ones approaching hip deep...really missin that clear flat ice...hopin for a good shot of rain to knock the snow down now

That day sucked, I left my house at 4 am. Ended up leaving my homemade hut on the ice till yesterday because we couldn't get it past the drifts and after almost killing myself pulling it we find 100 dollar tickets on all our cars. If I hadn't landed that 12 pounder the day would have been a total bust.

lol those are some good summaries guys. GBD and O.My.Buddy I appreciate you guys coming out to make the day worth it. 4.5 hour drive from Waterloo to Lake Simcoe and then another 2 hours to get off the ice after being snowed in for one 6lb laker is worth it any day for me. HAHA not!

Ive driven hours to Southampton, East tribs, Gbay tribs to find completely blown and unfishable water after being warned that would be the case. I think Friday was the first time ive every truly regretted going fishing lol. And it was still worth it to some extent but that was one expensive fish.

Oh well...till next weekend. Gbay I got a new high wall sled so those drifts wont have anything on me next time.

i think the warm weather thats coming through this weak will knock some of that snow on the ice out. but will the ice be safe enough to go on without any worries after the warm front?

@ river55- I liked the hut setup and it looked like it should be no problem on flat ice or crusted snow. What's the base on that for pullin? what added the weight? the wood?

@ Nado- good investment on the sled. Sorry we kinda bailed at the the end of the day. Fuel was getting low and we figured buddy with the 4x4 could get you out quick if you were stuck. Parking lots and ramps are key for access. even that hill to get on the lake is dangerous. I never fished there before and now I know why!

@cdnhazards- buttloads of ice out there and high quality solid stuff under all that snow. Any main lake ice is still good. I wouldn't be concerned about it unless we got at least 72 hours of well above freezing and lots of rain. Still, any river or other high current area will always be thinner and can get sketchy quick, if they're not just always no go zones

No worries OMB, I dont get stuck lol. Im down for the long walk next weekend with my new sled I feel like I can go the distance. Hoping to get out Sunday, I gotta go back to the outfitter and pick up the auger I forgot on my way there.
