Imo performance should come over looks. Take a look at Fenwick rods, they don't look too flashy, but they perform great. The HMG is right round 100$.

I'd rather have an ugly rod that can catch a grander marlin than with a rod that makes me look like a GQ model that can't handle much.

If you want bling and function, be prepare to bend over and hand over some money. There are lots of options out there in that categories...but you gotta pay for vanity.
