Hi All,

I haven't been fishing in many, many years, but I would like to take my 11-year old son out. Some 40 years ago mY Dad brought me to Sharbot a Lake in Ontario. We put worms on hooks and caught lots of fish. That's all I want to do with my son. Real basic. We are in Rochester, NY, and close to the Finger Lakes, but I just don't get the sense that the basic worm on hook fishing is all that good there anymore. Sharbot was amazing.

Any suggestions for a good area to go no more than a day's drive from Rochester where we might be able to rent a small boat and catch lots of perch and bluegills and such?

Thank you,

DSK

Almost any lake will be able to provide that type of fishing, you just need to know where to go. If all you want is Perch, Bluegills and the like, fishing on shore would be great. If you do want to rent a boat, fish shallower waters with decent amounts of weed growth and structure like logs rocks ect, The panfish love to hide in that stuff but will gladly bolt out to take a worm.

I wouldn't recommend going out this time of year because everything is slowing down and it's gonna be really cold.

Do some research and plan a trip for this spring or summer, the fishing is a lot better in the warmer months and you won't have to bundle up in 6 layers.

a one day drive gives you a ton of range but any lake can give you non stop action with a hook and worm. just look for cover or anything like logs, trees or anything like that. i don't know specific locations around rochester but if you toss a worm near cover, the fishing will be non-stop just remember to get a license for wherever you guys plan to go if you decide to fish. good luck

I'd definitely say wait till at least late spring, this time of year panfish are a lot tougher if you don't have a boat.

Worm is an indicator! If there is active fish there they go for it. However I agree with what was said. Warmer weather would be nicer for the kid and will produce more fish, although panfish remain active even during ice season

yes, but it's definitely more technical if you want to have a productive day.
