anywayse as usual any info would be appreciated and like i said the lakes im targeting are stocked with salmonids...( rainbow, brook and splake)

and if for what ever reason you feel the info you would like to give me somewhat sensible can send me a private message, ill keep my mouth shut...

i will be updating this thread as i go kinda like a blog with pics and things i figure out....

go shallower in the winter... ive caught brookies and browns just in 3-5 ft of water under the ice... on a side note my buddy caught a half dead chinook on a minnow while fishing for pannies at frenchmans bay,

how about ice augers im most likely gonna snowshoe to most of the places with a sled are the hand powered ones descent or should i juss get a gas powered one?... keeping it light would be nice but...

Gas powered is sweet especially for running and gunning for brookies, but they are heavy for sure, if you keep the blades sharp on a hand auger they're great too. I like to fish in a foot of water right at ice up for specks. Small spoons, light line, but one of my favorite baits is a bead head wooly bugger, pink and white or just pink with some Krystal flash on it.

Hah, sorry.. yeah. I was thinking of a couple wooly bugger patterns I have that are not weighted when I wrote that.

[edit]

What are rainbows feeding on during the winter months anyways?

Bugs minnows and crustacean :) anything that goes by there face lol, a small pink and white tube jig would work wonders!

Assuming you know the lakes you are going to fish, which it sounds like you do. I would target bays that have streams or rivers flowing into them althought you have to be careful that the ice will hold you as it won't be as thick where there is a current. Close to the shore is good in places like that, fish still like the cover of fallen trees or rocks even when a lake is frozen solid.
If you are on foot a toboggan is great for carrying augers and gear, you can carry a lot of weight very easily cause it will slide across the snow or ice without much problem.

Just one small point, brookies, lakers and the hybred splake are not considered salmonids as they are all members of the char family.

Alfie.
