Hey guys!

I wanted to try out ice fishing this year at lake simcoe.
I have never been ice fishing before so I need to pick up some gear. Since I am starting out I don't want to spend too much yet. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks! Also, I would prefer to pick up everything from bass pro.

Id say at minimum

2 rods or tip ups
Hand auger
Sled or backpack (recommend sled)
Some kind of heater cause u will get cold. It's nice to at least warm your hands.

That's basically all my buddy and I started with. Bought an adapter for the auger to attach it to a drill (works great), and we picked up a 6 man hut :). Also, don't cheap out on the auger. I did and bought a new one after two trips out. Ended up with 6 inch swede bore. I think it was 100 bucks or so.

It all depends on what you will be going after. I fished bare bones for years sitting on a pail with the wind at my back. Number one improvement for me was getting a portable hut.

If you are fishing for perch, get a cheap rod in the 20 - 24 inch range. Light action and use your smallest fishing reel you have. spool on some 6 lb test over your existing line and have at it.

If you are fishing for Pike, Lakers, or Whitefish, get a 26 - 32 inch medium heavy action. spool with 8 - 10 lb line, ( I use 15 lb super slick but fish inside a heated hut).

Don't worry about ice auger to start. See if you enjoy ice fishing first. My advise..... rent a hut in the perch grounds, split the cost with a couple of buddies and have a great time. If you enjoy it, great, it cost you 25 - 35 bucks each. You get a free ride out to the heated hut, holes are already done.

First time out - you should rent a hut. Buy a light combo from bass pro and go have fun with some perch.

I recommend:

Floyd Hales - (South East side of simcoe)
Steves fish huts (South East side)
Lucky Sons (West side of cooks bay). They can even deliver pizza to your hut.

My hut is where its (going to be) at! Fish fry on the ice. I used those non stick bbq sheets when I went camping and they are amazing! You can cook anything on them.

I have never tried the sheets.
But the ready grill was a flop for me.
Just wouldn't light up.

Am sort of expecting that but hoping for the best. It does seem a little too good to be true..
