Looking at picking up a new float rod, looking at the raven IM6 or IM8 in 13'. I fish lots of big water and am looking for a rod with some backbone for mostly rainbows.

I would prefer a 14' or 15' rod but I could get the Im8 in 13 for almost the same price as the 6. Is it worth it to get the im8?

If anyone else has any recommendations for a rod in the 150-200 range that would be welcome too.

Thanks!

The IM6 13.6 is very whippy and it is light action. IM8 13 foot is medium light action. I have one im8 and was worth every penny, amazing back bone, but soft enough tip to use 4lb leader. you want something to tear fish out of water on heavier leader. go IM6 11.6.

Thanks for your input!

I should have mentioned I normally run light 4 or 5lb leaders.

I am really leaning townards the 13 Im8

i use a streamside 11'6 IM8 rod, love it, no problem handling big salmon either, i usually run with 6lb line for trout, 12lb for salmon

IM8 for sure. I fished the 14' up until this October and I liked it a lot. Only complaint I have is that it was a bit tip heavy. Rod can has enough power to turn chinnys.

Forgot to mention, it is pretty tip heavy. need a good 10oz float reel at least. Get the sliding rings, both cheaper and will come in handy when you need to adjust the rod balance. Also you can set a hook by flick of your wrist, you don't even need to move the rod that much.

Thanks guys!

It would be nice to have a rod to handle nooks as well.

I was planning on getting the sliding rings.
I have a raven matrix, is that to light of a reel?

take it with you, call up bunch of peopel around you, to see if they have it. go put it on it and see how it will handle. personally i don't think the raven reels match their rods really well.

I have the Raven RV9, I'm somewhat new to the game but I love it. klik's right about fast hook set. I've been using 4lb leader, fluoro mind you.

there is few factors to a rod, action is separate from line choice. raven im8 13' for is medium light action with moderate(medium) tip. which means how much the tip bends, the 14' is slow action. that is why some rods are more whippy some are stiff and handle the same line capacity. you can have a 4-8lb light action rod with fast tip or slow tip. that is why all rods are different. genrally im8 13 foot has the best of both worlds. jim at centerpinangling can help you on that, his prices are good also, if you go pick it up there is no shipping charge. like going to a store and picking up w/e you want, he is one of the only few authorized raven dealers in toronto area. few of the chinese fishing stores on Sheppard ave could give you good discounts, but then you don't get a receipt. got my rod 250 no tax.
