I was really interested to know some overall facts of fishing in Canada and just bumped into this

http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/stats/rec/can/2010/section4-eng.htm

Here is a summary

-The number of active anglers in Canada is just over 3.2 million, with 2.7 million being resident- Ontario has the largest number of anglers with nearly 1 million
-The numbers have slighly decreased
- The recreational fishing contributes over 8 $ billion to the Canadian economy
-Average age of anglers is 51 yrs
- A male dominated territory, over 80% of anglers are male
-In 2010, nearly 200 million fish were caught - Average release rate is 63%
-Walleye, trout and perch are the most caugth fish in Canada -in Ontario, they are Walleye, Perch, Smallmouth

--> Note, I added more numbers here, from a recent colum in Ontario Out of Doors magazine

The most drastic changes in amount of anglers definitely seems to be in Ontario & Quebec.

In Ontario a decline, and then a massive boost in anglers (more then there were before).

In Quebec a decline and a rebound, but still at a loss.

Would be nice to see that overall number double or triple! ;)

Hmm :) would be nice for the government, not for the fisheries I think. Already you have to move 200 KM north of GTA to get descent fishing, ...Doublingtheanglers means 400 km driving perhaps :?:

lol I know what you mean.. it is a double edged sword.

Increased numbers promotes the sport, gets more people involved, makes sure they're not ignorant about it, etc..

But like you said, water bodies can only handle so much fishing pressure. Would definitely need increased funding for hatchery stocking, which ideally would occur if revenues are increased. But who knows.
