looking to buy either a islander steelheader or a ross flow centerpin for lake ontario/huron tribs... any info would be much appreciated... heard something about the ross releasing line easier?

The Islander is definitely the better reel, and you may get lucky and gets one that works well.

Test them...Islander is Canadian (important!!), however Ross is a fine manufacturer fabricating good fly reels...so my intervention here would err on the side of getting as much info as possible. I like the porting on the Ross as well.

I've tried an Islander and it's OK...unless you want to upgrade the bearings to ABEC 7s...frankly it's a spool on a pin and with degreasing and frequent use they become smoother running...
Amundson has a nice looking float reel and I use a $75 TFG...

I have a 2nd gen KP Imperial that I may be coerced into selling

You can shoot me a PM if you are interested..

thanks for the replies guy's! I'm probably going with the islander, now does anyone know if your able to add the FACTORY UPGRADE - ABEC 7 BEARINGS after the original purchase or must it be purchased at the same time? cheers

Don't know if you need to upgrade to ABEC 7s, since the number only denotes the size of the bearing. A lower or higher number doesn't mean it's better or worse.
