Haven't had the time to do much fishing nor to be on the boards but I did manage a solo trip.

I started in 16 fow about an hour before first light. I set up the shack and drilled holes. Took a little longer than nomal as one of my blades has developed a few nicks, doesn't help that I am still rockin the hand auger and I am drilling more than 2 feet of solid ice.

I had decided on a tried and true Lindy techni colour glow jig and a minnow on the dead stick. My action rod would be a Northland tackle live forage rippin shad. Action was slow but decent. Suddenly things changed for the better. I was rippin up to about 2feet off the bottom, every now and again contacting the muddy bottom. Then as I slowed my action and started to twitch the bait, it got absolutely hammered. The hit nearly pulled the rod out of my hand, my grip quickly went more solid and I set the hook. The hook-set nearly broke the rod in two. Good weight, I'm into a good one. After a quick battle I saw its head fill the 8" hole, I quickly lipped the lunker and pulled it out. Once up I measuerd it at 28.75" took a couple pics and dropped her back down the hole.

A fantastic fish anywhere you are. As it was a solo trip the phot is not as good as I would have liked but it will have to do.

Hey welcome back RedCat. It's been a while since hearing from you.
Nice fish, I'm sure you will see more this winter.
How did the Cats treat you last year?

Alfie.

Surprise I am remembered it has been so long. Thank you for asking though. LAst year was slow for the cats..... only for me because I could only escape once for a quick trip in the rain with my son. My 6 year old son landed a 32" cat and I got skunked. More time for that this year I hope.

The rest of my day was the norm for the red river in mid january. A few fish willing to take the bait in between the unrellenting sauger. I ended the day with 14 fish landed.I was going to head out th3 day that I posted this but it was extremely cold..... I would have been out if I was not going solo. Perhaps this weekend will be better

Of course I remember you RedCat :) I keep PM's for members in folders in my emails with various notes so I can refer to tips I receive from others. Yours says " RedCat, top notch Man. Catfisher." I check it out periodically when I am going after Cats.
That must have been fun for your son to land a nice Cat like that, and for Dad to get skunked, I hope he let you live it down.
