Haven't had the time to do much fishing nor to be on the boards but I did manage a solo trip.
I started in 16 fow about an hour before first light. I set up the shack and drilled holes. Took a little longer than nomal as one of my blades has developed a few nicks, doesn't help that I am still rockin the hand auger and I am drilling more than 2 feet of solid ice.
I had decided on a tried and true Lindy techni colour glow jig and a minnow on the dead stick. My action rod would be a Northland tackle live forage rippin shad. Action was slow but decent. Suddenly things changed for the better. I was rippin up to about 2feet off the bottom, every now and again contacting the muddy bottom. Then as I slowed my action and started to twitch the bait, it got absolutely hammered. The hit nearly pulled the rod out of my hand, my grip quickly went more solid and I set the hook. The hook-set nearly broke the rod in two. Good weight, I'm into a good one. After a quick battle I saw its head fill the 8" hole, I quickly lipped the lunker and pulled it out. Once up I measuerd it at 28.75" took a couple pics and dropped her back down the hole.
A fantastic fish anywhere you are. As it was a solo trip the phot is not as good as I would have liked but it will have to do.
