I know a lot of us heard about the Air Canada jet that had to make an emergency landing but did you all know that they also dumped 90% of there fuel in lake Ontario. I was pretty pissed an wondered I there was no other solution????????
WTF. NOW I KNOW WHY THE LAKE IS SO SCREWED

I realized the fuel was most likely dumped for safety reasons while landing but dumping all that fuel in the lake cant be good.

Fuel dumping probably happens quite often over the lake , but we don't always hear about it.

I just picture a poor guy out fishing and then suddenly, he gets soaked by gas and oil! That is gross, wonder why some one has not come up with a better solution.

Less chance of hitting someone on the lake than on the land. I doubt that many eat fish from Lake Ontario , they are just fun to catch.

Just wonder, many people say they don't eat the fish, but how about drinking tap water??????? I do I can't afford to buy water. I have a hard time buying gas for my car, water costs more than gasoline. I would have never thought that the gov. Would approve this sort of actions. But I know it's for all the live that was saved. New solutions guys

Wait, something is wrong with tap water?

When planes dump fuel, it typically self vaporizes as its a near gas like liquid. Its not your cars gasoline. In addition most planes today (especially commercial planes) dump the fuel through a vaporizer to aid in the process of making it all turn into a gas from a liquid.

Plus they only dump the minimum amount of fuel possible to get them to within save landing weight limits. Fuel costs money, and it takes too long to really dump the entire tanks due to the time the vaporizers take.

Instead of worrying about what the fish are swimming in, I'd be more worried about what your breathing in.

It sucks that "occassionally" this type of action is done. And any incidences should always been evaluated for improvement.

However,

Just a reminder that last week (Friday) when we had our BIG RAINSTORM (Union station flooded) ... there are HUNDREDS of MILLIONS (Millions!) of Gallons/Litre of Water that ran down the Tribs, Culverts and Storm drains INTO THE LAKE.

Carrying:

- Garbage

- Raw Sewage

- Fertilizer

- Paint, Gas &Oil, and Tons of other chemicals (Clorine, PCB's)

- Prescription Medications

- Radiated particles

In the "BIG PICTURE" this contributes 1000's times more than the "HOT TOPIC" news events.
It happens Dozens of times every year and will continue so ... forever.

Food for thought

*THANK GOD for our little invasive species the ZEBRA MUSSELS!

They are starting to be recognized as one of the BEST FILTER SYSTEMS our lakes ever had.

this is true but they also filter out zooplankton and copepods that are the foundation for the entire food web.

Jet fuel, gas, diesel, most hydrocarbons are lighter then water and float to the top where they will evaporate into the atmosphere. Fish will avoid it. It sucks that they dump it onto the lake, but fortunately it's a rare incident.

Zebras live on the bottom, I don't see how they would be any benefit to floating oil, gas or any other fuel.
