I was wondering if any other members use fishing kayaks and if so what models they use.
I have a riot sit on top angler that I use for mid sized rivers and lakes and I am thinking of adding a Ocean Kayak trident 13 for larger body's of water and even for the occasional fall outing onto Lake Ontario .
Cheers

Me and my old man have two Ocean Kayaks 13'9 long
They are souped up. Built in trolling motor foot steering fish finders and soon GoPros. Lol

Nice,
it seems like you have them set up perfectly for lake fishing .I looked at the Torque kayak and was considering this model but I also wanted a river kayak as I have a Seasonal campsite Site on a river I like to fish and I was concerned about damaging the motor if it was used, and because most weekends I drift down the river a motor would not work for me. But I really like the idea of your model kayaks for lake fishing especially as I am only about 15 minutes. From Belwood lake on most weekends.

We're actually on the Trent river system. The max depth it sits in water is about 12-14 inchs I would say maybe less. I will check this weekend

efka is a pretty serious 'yak angler, not sure what model but he has. I've seen photos and its pretty pimped out.

I use my kayaks for fishing I have a Old Town Adventurer 16' with rudder , Necky Zoar Sport 14' with rudder both have 2 flush mount rod holders behind the seat and 1 mounted in front on the deck, also have a fish finder mounted on the deck of the Old Town. Also have a SOT Typhoon 10' made by Dimension also a great kayak good in small rivers.

I mostly use the Riot sit on top angler ,it has a few good points including rudder and anchor line with a small tackle compartment with tray in the centre console that is convenient for smaller items ,fly boxes etc. the kayak comes standard with rear flush mounted rod holders and a Scotty style rod holder up front on the console. It is actually not a bad kayak and it works nice for the river I fish.
I have a older wilderness systems Manteo 12 that is a nice kayak for lakes and intermediate fast water while still having the ability to be used for fishing ,although no where near the same type of stability as a sot.

I was planning to wait until Father's Day before getting the Trident 13 but it now seems I will be on my way to Shanghai on that weekend so I may pick it up for next weekend instead.

Changed my mind and picked one up this afternoon . Will try it out in the morning ,looking forward to using it

I use a "Moken 10 Lite" Kayak for fishing. Bought it from the Muskoka Paddle shop. I really like it- its stable, has lots of capacity ( i'm a pretty big guy) , nice for rigging, and it fits inside my van for easy transport. People should check these out - they have differnet lengths of course.20130612_152417.jpg

I picked up a Ocean Kayak a couple of weeks ago and I really like the speed and how it tracks . I think I will be taking the rudder from my riot and swapping to the Trident 13 . Tomorrow I am picking up a hummingbird 385 .
Cheers

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting a kayak for the first time, as a student my income is.... limited lol so my boating dreams are on hold for at least 1 more year. Please let me know what I should look for in a kayak for small/cottage/calm lakes which can allow me to fish and are a great started kayak.

I am not the strongest at swimming, yet hopefully after the lessons I got coming I will be, so I am looking for something that may give me a little more stability or whatever you guys may recommend.

Thanks in advance!!

The little Pelican kayaks aren't THAT BAD. Don't let people fool you... you'll be fine out there. They take a little more muscle to get going as quickly, don't track as well, and don't have convenient storage -- but you'll be on the water. AND you won't get stuck with it as they fly on Kijiji -- keep it until you upgrade. I've been on the Canadian Tire Pelican kayaks a few times for swimming fun. No problem. Just pack what you need and keep it by your feet.

I bought a Tarpon 120 and couldn't be more happier. As with you, I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a kayak until recently. Also, remember that the fish don't know what kind of kayak you are on... only people judge!

Thanks for the honest reply! Going to look into it as soon as I can!

I know little to nothing about kayaks so this helps a ton. Thanks again :)

I started out on a fairly basic Pelican 10' kayak- and found Sail's price much better than CTC. I got it on sale mid way thru the summer (last year) for almost $200 cheaper than the regular CTC price. I'd check out what they have.

i've got a clearwater designs tofino, paid about $600 for it, then put another few hundred into it with the addition of an elite-4x, a scotty triple mount for rod holder, gopro, and fishfinder mount, and a few other tweaks.
below is a pic of my friend's pelican which he pimped out with flush mounts, fishfinder, and covered it up in camo wrap (left) and my tofino on right.

mine is very stable, and my buddy swears by his pelican. love the seat on my clearwater tofino, lots of back support, tons of leg room (i'm 6'6) and fairly easy to lug around and throw on top of the roof. i know enough guys selling their boats and getting into yak fishing. it's a blast and you can fish alot of spots boats can't get to.

try a few out and pick one that you enjoy the most.
