Ontario record - 24" This one - 22" Weight unknown, but it was HEAVY!

Couple of angling faux pas here. You'll notice that I'm using a rather poor net. Damned if I can find my rubberized one, so the back-up was drafted into service. Second, well, I kind of dropped the fish. My arthritic wrists were a bit sore that morning, and a sudden strong wriggle overcame my grip. Oh well, it was none the worse afterward.

It was reported to the Park Warden, a nice chap named Jamieson Dyer, and he was thrilled to see how big the smallmouth are getting in there. He was thrilled? Hell, I was over the Moon with my new personal best!

Setup was my usual quick and dirty drop shot, circle hook palomared about 2ft up the line, and baited with an XZone Slammer. Toss it around some rock falls, and just wait for the fun to begin.

Enjoy the video!

Very nice!

I smashed my PB smallie this summer as well. Watch time out of the water for the fish - I was guilty of this too with my trophy smallie. I was lucky to catch more trophy bass this summer, and improved my C&R tenfold.

Is that a Shimano IX2000? If so, I use the same cheapo reel, and quite like it!

Very close, it's an FX2000, on an FX2652A rod. Unfortunately the rod broke about an hour later, it's been a good friend for almost 20 years. Had to switch to my Pflueger President reel on a Shakespeare rod, which is also good, but I would love to replace that Shimano. Oh, the memories... :(

You caught a 22" Smallie and you were cool as a cucumber??

You must catch them all the time :)

Sweet catch!!!

Edit: Just helping with the video

Nice fish.

I was going to comment on the FX reel too. It's a prime example that you don't need all the bling bling gear to catch some real fish. It's about what's in your head...not what's in your hand. :)

I've always said that the most important thing is simply to put something in front of their nose. As far as what it is and how you got it down there, well, those are mere details.

Also have the FX2000 with FX2652A combo (also have the baby brother FX1000 combo) Had them over 20 years now. Combos were less than $30.00 brand new, but have accounted for more fish than any of my gear. One of those rare times you got more than you paid for.

Tough to go wrong with Shimano, in my opinion. Got mine up in Huntsville, can't remember the store, somewhere on the main drag. We were going camping at Algonquin, and I hadn't done any fishing in years, didn't even own a rod and reel. Well, the reel still works fine, and has never had any maintenance. I don't get out a lot, that may account for its longevity.

Wish I could say the same, but my clarus baitcaster snapped swinging a 2lb bass into the canoe. I treat my rods with respect, I don't throw them around and I don't abuse them. But it just snapped, sent it to shimano canada, they tell me the lifetime warranty won't replace it due to user error. By no means was it an expensive rod ($90), but none the less, that's $90 wasted plus $20 for shipping plus ~$30 for driving to pick it up. Not happy with these guys, don't plan on buying shimano again, gonna throw out my shirt too probably.

Rant over.

Nice catch!

Here I was thinking I would be the only one up in Killarney catching smallies, lol. I only shore fished and the biggest I caught was a 12" on Three Narrows. Good trip though.
