Well it's been a different ice fishing season on simcoe so far, with warm temperatures and a lot of open water the pressure on the frozen grounds is at it's peak. Any given weekend you can find from 200 to 300 people on small access points where only a handful of people were fishing them this time last year. I've only went out 4 times this season but got lucky and only got skunked once (knock on wood), but even on those days i had some action on my fishfinder to keep me busy.
After seeing so many people the first time i was out, and seeing fish on fishfinder but not committing, i knew i had to change my tactics. The next trip i stayed away from crowds and downsized my lures. At the end of the day i was more than happy with my results; 4 lakers landed, all between 6-8 lbs, two lost, and by the run, one was a decent size. and had constant action and chasers on the fishfinder.
My third trip applied same tactics, didn't get same results, maybe due to weather, but had 3 lakers on my line, and landed 2.
On my last trip last weekend i was going to the lake with some hand tied jig flies. Some flash and rabit fur drove the fish crazy. Landed 3 lakers all of the decent size between 7-10 pounds. And to make my day, got one monster that made my reel sing so loud i had people coming over to watch me fight it. After fighting for 10 min finally landed it, lucky one of the guys who came over to look had a scale. 16.2 lbs. A quick picture and back it went. This was the best fight i've ever had since i started ice fishing. I hope the weather will stay cool so we can have a longer season.
Good luck everyone.
