I hope I'm not the only one who experiences this, but I figure I'd throw it out there.

I was out yesterday with some buds and at certain times when I cast, my leader would get tangled with my float & split shots. I have my setup as mainline (12lbs mono)->split shot line (8lbs fluoro)->leader (4lbs fluoro). The lines are all joined together with two micro swivels that can rotate.

My shot line is about 2 feet in length and my leader varies from 3 - 5 feet. I would also place a micro split shot on the leader, just below the last swivel.

I've spent countless times trying to untangle the mess, but I end up just retying my leader because it would ruin the smoothness after untangling.

My other buds didn't have this problem at all and it sucks, because when I cast my line out, I can't tell if it's tangled or not before it hits the water. I have had this problem occur a lot with using a spinning cast reel. My friend who uses a spinner cast, doesn't have nearly as much trouble as I do. I also noticed that when his bobber/bait lands in water, it lands horizontal to the water. Where as mine, would land in a clump of stuff in the water.

Any ideas to improve my setup?

Thanks.

I don't think its your set up. Try stopping your line before it hits the water, this will cause the line to tighten up and send the bait and split shots out in front of your float, ? I am no expert but I think it will help.

Most people have had your problem from time to time. I still encounter difficulties when casting into a strong wind, and I now try to quarter my casts into the wind whenever possible to avoid the mess you've described. As fishheads stated stopping the float just before it hits the water can help. My best advise is to go to your favorite tackle store and buy a tackle tamer which is designed to hold leaders, usually used by walleye fishermen to hold worm harness ,and fill it up with prepared leaders & shot lines. When your leader gets tangled cut it off and replace it with one of your prepared leaders. You can find similar devises at stores like Canadian Tire. You don't want to waste valuable fishing time tying new set ups when you are in the field.

Have a buddy that uses on of these ties his leaders with a quick clip on them, all he has to do is take the old one off the swivel and put a new one on. I personally do not use swivels, but he definitely would beat me in a re-tie contest
