Part of a forum is allowing more experienced anglers to educate, whether it be on techniques, locations, lures, or accurate lengths, weights, and weight to length ratios of fish.

We are lucky to have someone as experienced as Muskie Bait as a contributing member of this forum.

I missed the part where he said anything negative to anyone. Some of you need to re-read this thread from the beginning, realize that you are in fact the negative ones, and edit your posts.

Captain Paddle Board, I catch awesome fish and lots of them from my inflatable raft. Maybe that makes me an expert too?

Unfortunately, there are things called honest mistakes. Half the conversion charts online are bogus, scales measure in both kg and lbs, and then some of us move our hands further apart each time we tell our story. Its just fishing.

If you wanted to educate, you probably would have found a more tactful way of pointing out the inaccuracy. Instead, you decided to call him out on it in a way that tried to make him look ridiculous. Probably because there are some hard feelings. Maybe you don't like people who actually own real boats and have the money to take it to the competitive level?

I could be way off base, but my original point remains. You decided to take out some inadequacies out on Always Catching who just made an honest mistake.

I bet I could fish on your level. Your paddle board vs. my raft! :)

As for my quip to Muskiebait, ya it was out of line. But using 1000 word essays just to say the camera angle makes fish look bigger is unnecessary and only adds insult to the injury. Guess my inadequacy is me being too dumb to understand what the hell he is talking about half the time.

You two got all mythbusters on Always Catching... who just wanted to show off some seriously big looking (regardless of the camera angle) bass.
 
I don't know anything about record SM sizes or anything and I did that original silly photo analysis for fun!!

As expected...if you give specific details (length, width, weight, girth etc etc) it shouldn't be a surprise if someone calls you out on it. I don't think it's jealousy, it's just the way it is. It's a shame we will never know if it was a record breaker or not.

What injury? Since when is making an honest mistake on the size of a fish on a forum injurious?

(One could imagine a scenario where it would be injurious, such as a botched measurement on a retained fish that was not of legal keeping size. Hence why it's important that anglers learn to properly measure their catch. Otherwise, you could be facing a fine from the MNR and other unpleasantries.) And just to reiterate, that was merely a hypothetical used to demonstrate a simple point, I didn't accuse anyone of doing anything meriting a fine.

I would have been absolutely thrilled if OP had caught a 30" SM! I am sure MB would have loved it too. That would be amazing :D Frankly, I'm not sure such a fish even exists, it would have been Earth shattering among the angling community, that is for sure.

Yes, I would be more than thrilled for the person to catch a 30" SM. There is no jealousy at all...only admiration. But I want to actually see proof of such 30" fish to shut everyone up, including myself, that a 30" SM cannot exist. Until then, I'll remain ever skeptical.

As stated previously, Ontario record and world record SM has not exceeded 30" yet...regardless if the fish is skinny, regular or fat. Show me proof and I'll be happy to congratulate.

We learn this in science...if you decided to throw out numbers and figures, you better have data to support it...otherwise, people will grill you to DEATH for making such assertion. Sorry, I've been in grad school for 7 years...it's been drilled into my head. And I take every number throw up on messageboards with skeptism until I see a scale or ruler reading. Less severe mistake I'll understand as estimation and experience error. We all make them. Severe mistakes...those I'll point out.

I liked the pun.

I'm not all serious as people think...I get puns and jokes and sarcasm...I love them...and I throw in people's face all the time.

But...if you make certain statements, then back it up. My so-call 1000 word essay is my real world factual data of just what I'm trying to say. If I accuse people of overestimating their fish length by 30% without showing proof, I would be throwing up a number without supporting such figure, and be a hypocrite, right? :razz:

Yes, if you are the most knowledgeable angler on that body of water, it doesn't matter what you fish with or what you fish from...you are THE expert. That is why grandpa with his 14-foot tinny can beat out Mr. Hotshot Angler of the Year with his 20-foot Tracker and 150 Yahama on local tourneys...because grandpa has been fishing that lake all his life and named his favourite pet bass in the lake...while Mr. Hotshot has general knowledge but don't know the lake like the back of his hand.

Which is why I have never said I'm an expert and I'll never agree to that term. I know a lot of general knowledge and I can generally do well fishing anywhere...but I'm not one who fish the same spot or for the same species 24/7. So I'll never be an expert...but I'm a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none...and that's OK too.

Does owing a Tracker and actually entering into tournament actually make you a pro? Does owning a $1000 pin immediately make you a steelheader? Don't answer that...they are rhetorical questions. We already know the answer.

Again, science teaches me that the 15 year old summer student can be an expert in the system he's studying...even more than all the scientists with their PhD and years of research...if he truly knows his system better than anyone else in the world. Yes, a highschool kid without his diploma can be the leading internation expert in a cancer cure. It is not what you own...but what you actually know.

Salmotrutta, Muskiebait, now we're getting to the heart of the matter!

I'll agree measuring fish properly is important for legal slot sizes... and that grandpa in his tinny knows his local lake better than anyone else... and I know I made my point and it was taken. So I feel better knowing we're all on the same page.

Now who wants a hug? I know I do. :)

Always Catching, you can get in on the hug too if you like. I think we all need to make up.
