This morning I got out early to do some fishing in dunnville. When I got to my spot I immediatly saw steelhead jumping. They were big and small. I started off with roe floating off the bottom....no bites. Then I went to a spinner. Second cast a steelhead smashed it! This fish actually broke the treble hook on my mepps, and off he swam . Then I changed to a spoon. On my first cast I feel this tiny little movement on my spoon and it turns out my spoon went through a school of alewife (shad) and hooked two on the large treble hook. The blood was coming out of both of them and they were both hooked all the way through their back. I knew they wouldn't survive so I just put them on the ground and gave them a knock to the head with a pair of pliers. Then, cast after cast I was hooking these shad and they were dying, so I got fed up with killing innocent little fish and went to worms on a jighead. Man, I rigged my worms every way possible, but nothing was working. I tried everything my mind could think of, but didn't get a single bite. The guy beside wasn't cathing anything either. He said the big walleye from lake erie are in the grand. So I fished for walleye. Again, not a single bite.
I am tried of getting skunked or only cathing small smallies and gobies. I am going to fish in my beloved Chippawa creek, and maybe, (maybe) get something like a bass, pike or catfish. Sometimes, I find when it's good if you're haveing bad luck all the time fishing for salmon and steelhead and all the other new or challenging species, just to go back to what you did all summer, warm water fish(bass, catfish, sheepshead, etc). Then, when you catch some of the easier species, go back to the challenging ones because now you have your confidence back, and in fishing, a lot of it is about your confidence, not the bait or lure you have on your line. Oh, and of course, try not to hook innocent little shad . You can bet I'll be back on the grand soon, but right now I will go to my local creek, the creek I know best and try to catch some bass, not my bass LOL.
