I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but, I suddenly found out that I am about 10 minutes away from Erindale and 15 minutes away from Memorial Park at P.C. Wednesday I was at Erindale and there was a guy there bobber fishing and he kept everything he caught...all of them about 3 inches long! Some guy was telling me he does that every day. So Yesterday and today (finally remembered to put my rod back in the car) went down to P.C. to wet a line during my lunch. Scared the crap out of a few ducks (I didn't realize that I could cast 3/4 of the way across the river with a good spoon on my little 6'6" Ugly Stick!..LOL)and caught a lot of leaves but narry a nibble.

I may have to give Erindale a whirl next week, but don't want to start loosing lures. Any suggestions what might be something worth trying?

Cheers,
Cameron

Sound like the 'float fishing alarm' went off... Try some roe under a float and that should work. Set it out of the snag zone or 2-7" off the bottom. Spoons are best fished off peirs.

One time a couple weeks ago I stopped at Erindale park on my way back from the Nott, Just stood on the bridge and had a look, didn't bother wetting a line as it was packed with people. I noticed a guy doing the same thing. Just has a float and looked like a small piece of worm and was fishing behind a rock in the slack water. Every few minutes he would pull up a tiny fish 2-4" and toss it in his bag.

This time of year as the water in the tribs becomes even COLDER....

A worm should almost GAURANTEE either a CHROME or BROWN!

A lot of the Course fish (Chubs, Catfish) Wont be "Stealing" your bait every second.

So, if you get hits....... then you know its some wonderful Trout family member.

Good luck.

Natural Baits, with SIMPLE Setups WILL produce my friend.

(Light lines, small hooks, light weight.... and TIGHT LINES! the fish are ON THE BOTTOM! put your bait there)

Probably a silly question, but can you "float" with a spinning rig? Assuming a correct setup with leader and weights. It's something that I've only just seen this year being done as I haven't been river fishing before now.

This was an older guy, right by those concrete things that spread most of the way across the river and he was tossing in behind in the slack water. I don't know what the heck you could do with all those fish that small...unless he's stocking a pond...lol....but it didn't look like he was tossing them in any sort of water. Treating them as smelts maybe?

Yeah you can float with that, not ideal, but it works fine.

Try something that looks like a single egg (bead, yarn fly, single egg, or tiny roe bag) under a float and you should hit something.

I wonder if I'd be better trying to use my bait caster....since it's got the bar that can be held down to allow line to spool off.

Yeah this would be more ideal, a lot of people use bait casters paired up with longer rods for drifting.

Well, the longest I've got right now is 7' so not ideal, but maybe I'll rig it up and give it a go. Apparently Rainbows are now heading up the Credit after the Salmon eggs (going by some nice fisherman's information). Since I've never caught a Salmon or Trout it might be worth trying!

Yeah, you can fish floats with a spinning reel. I do it all the time. A worm might work too.

I wonder if he is keeping goby's and disposing them properly, this may be my optimistic opinion but I truly want to believe that people are good. I take my son with me and we always bring two bags one for cleaning up and one for goby's. I think if we all do this we can make a difference and maybe even influence the lugans out there to clean up their mess.

They looked like little trout or similar. IIRC goby's are ugly little critters.

Might as well keep to this thread rather than cluttering up! Went out at lunch today and was scoping things out and finally saw with my own peepers someone hook onto a nice sized fish! Jumped 1/2 dozen times and was foul hooked on the dorsal fin. I'd be willing to bet that he would have kept the fish for sure. It was exciting to watch and I'm glad the fish managed to break off. Another guy watching with me said it was a Salmon, and since I don't know the difference I'll go with what he said!

And yes, this time there were 3 of them fishing for the fingerlings.

Foul hooking happens a lot with salmon since there can be so many of them in so little water. Breaking them off is the right thing to do. It happens to everyone who float fishes once in a while. I've foul hooked a couple bows this year unintentionally.

Especially when the males are fighting; they swim right into your hook...happened to me a couple times...
Why can't they be civilized about it???
