So I decided to head to the river today at lunch to try float fishing with my spinning rig. Since the water is up at least a foot and murky as heck I didn't bother with a leader and just hooked on a wacky rigged rubber worm (don't recall the brand). Tossed a weight on there to try and get it down towards the bottom and threw on a bobber (yes, just a regular old bobber!) and started casting upstream and floating it past me and then a bit downstream. Reel in, repeat. At first me heart got pumping a bit thinking I was getting hits....until I realized that it was just snagging up a bit on the bottom and causing it to jerk a bit. After about 5 minutes of doing this I learned a very valuable lesson!......I was drifting it down and it was right in front of me and my bobber disappeared and took off. That's when I realized that I should have been taking up the slack as it floated down as I had no way to set the hook! After madly reeling away trying to get the line in, my bobber suddenly reappeared a ways up river and came floating back down to me.

.....sigh....

Well, there is always tomorrow!

you know...pin reels work well with taking up slack...just sayin lol

There's another lesson in there... you noticed your float jerking because it was hitting bottom. Observing that and adjusting your float is really going to dial things in for you.

Few lessons right there. Mend your line... you learned the hard way by loosing a fish. Having as little slack line as possible will make for better hooksets. Good for you on reading your float, it tells you a few things. Good luck tomorrow, lunch break sounds like a lot of fun :D These types of things can be taught through reading, but it is best to experience them out on river. A little bit of fine tuning OCD and it will all fall into place.

I did learn a few lessons all right. The bobber is OLD and kept slipping up the line so every cast I was trying to adjust it up to try and keep it off of the bottom. Time to hit CT I think and upgrade. I'm a geek and do tend to read up on things quite a bit, but you actually learn about it by getting out there and doing it  I'm pretty sure that if I can show my wife a picture of something substantial being hooked on "improper" gear, that she will let me upgrade!!

At the very least ditch the bobber and get a vertical float. It tells you MUCH more about what's going on.

And I'll bet that it doesn't act as an anchor when you are reeling it back upstream when the water is zooming along! I actually did try a vertical float, but the weight I had on was too much for it and I didn't have any mid-size split shot with me so it was either too big or too small.

I wasn't really planning on giving it a go today, but since there was almost nobody about I figure it would be a great time to look totally n00bish and give it a whirl!

trial and error, you gotta love it :).Sounds like you learned a few things on your lunch break and will try and put them to use on your next outing, good luck ocdcomputing :D

You've got me thinking about that...it's probably less than an hours drive for me...hmmm...

Went out again today to a different spot with the bait caster and decided to try my luck and learned another lesson! Apparently it's not the trees that you are aware of, but the trees you aren't that will get you! Hung the rig in the branches of a tree (dang bait caster!!) and ended up snapping my line trying to get it out. Of course the float (vertical) dropped into the current and is now on it's merry way to an unnamed Great Lake! Actually, I guess I learned TWO lessons today...because I just learned WHY I *should* be using a much lighter leader! *DOH*

The only plus side was it was the last cast before I had to head back to work anyways!

Oh well, there is always tomorrow!

Hope you catch something tomorrow. I think you should go to the first spot...i have a good feeling about that spot.
