As a newbie when it comes to river fishing Ive been buying my roe bags pre tied.

Id like to buy the stuff to make my own as I realize on the water sometimes you need big bags, small bags, single egg sacs, all in different colours.

What and where should I go to pick up the necessary supplies. I saw online that they make spawn sac "machines" to aid in speeding up the process, are these a good buy?

Cheers, Merry Christmas

Fishheads has great roe. Don't bother with a machine, too much $$ and spawn sacks aren't very hard to tie.

Sail or Basspro will have everything you need.

Get different coloured mesh, and spider thread. If you need eggs, you can get them from Fishheads.

i tie my own bags, i get my trout roe from a fish farm and cure my own, i got some salmon roe from a fish i kept early in the run, nice silver one, made a great supper.

i've got the orange box for tying bags, all its good for is making the gathering process easier

I learned to tie them in about half an hour (with a few really crappy ones that were too lose)

but yeah, You get the hang of it pretty quickly, i wouldn't spend money on a roller

watch a couple youtube videos.

I agree with everyone. sacks and spider wire. I have one of those aids and used it for like two sacs. pffft. hand tie them, its just as easy.

A buddies video:

Don't worry about the tying the knot part at the end. Just wrap the thread around it 5-10 times and then pull to break off.

I go 8 times clockwise, snap. and then with the remaining piece hanging I go 8 times counter clockwise, snap. They lock in together and it will never come undone.

If you buy spider thread from Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, or any tackle shop, no knot required.

I have been using a soldering iron lately because I've been selling roe bags. Produces a nicer bag, and is quicker than using spider wire. I have some brown roe that I keep forgetting to post in the classifieds, I better do that soon because everything may be frozen soon until the spring.

I would be careful about posting the fact that your selling roe, since it is illegal to do unless you have the appropriate licence , and you don't know who is reading your posts.

I found a couple spent bags on the bank the other day that somebody had tied using actual thread! I wouldn't be able to muster the patience for that...

Buy spider thread.... No Brainer.

Think roe counts towards limits too salmo, you would technically need to be able to prove how many fish it's from...

That being said... I'll take some off your hands.

Incorrect, no license is necessary to sell roe

There are, of course, rules and regulations governing the sale of roe.

I'm a guide, I post pictures of myself all over the forum, clearly I'm not stupid enough to do something illegal, let alone do something illegal and then post it online

I've been selling roe for months now, mostly to shops, I haven't gotten around to selling it directly to anglers, because I sell out pretty quickly and the volume directly to anglers is very low.

Now, having said that, I hope nobody gets the idea that it's legal to sell roe from fish you catch. That is illegal. There are rules and regulations governing the sale of roe. Familiarize yourself with them if you're interested in selling roe, but don't sell your catch, that's illegal.

Here's a little rig I made up for tying roe bags. Just 4 holes about 1" dia in a piece of scrap panneling, placed on top of a dollar store basket. (I assumed that all you regular steelheaders had a machine and that I was 1 of the few too cheap to buy one) I just put the little squares of mesh on top of the holes and push them down a bit with my finger, then use a very small spoon to put a few eggs into the little 'dish'.

Spider thread and lots of colours to experiment! Really easy and just a matter of trial and error. Dont be afraid to be generous with spider thread nothing sh***yer then having bags fall apart when the bites on.

As Its seem every one agrees that tying your own bags is the only way, Here's how i do it. Not the only way out their but it's my personal preference.

1. spawn net, mesh, or scarf, I use the squares for natural colored bags and I like to use scarf for the brighter bags. Find the scarf has a bit more color to it.
white and peach are my favorite for clear, chartreuse for dirty water and big fat pink bags for the chocolate milk

2. Spider wire, As most people agree is the best product, everyone's different I do 16 times around and pull tight till it snaps off. But I have used string and leader line in a pinch.

3. I lay the pre cuts out on a long piece of plastic wrap. Try to do as many bags in one go as possible.

4. Then tie them up. I always over tie and freeze my left over bags. Tie 100 of my fave colors then you know that if the bite is on you won't run out of bags and If you don't use them you have bags tied for your next trip.

Again Everyone is different

The wife called... she wants her scarf back! LOL

Good system you have going there!

same as mike. i rarely tie less than 100 in a shot. still seem to run out of green every time tho....... i dont do 16 turns tho. a buddy taught me to do a single overhand knot after about 7 or 8 wraps. even if im going bouncing i dont use floaters, but prob could

It's psychological with me I think... I never liked the appearance of the floater in the bag, so I would tie 90% of my bags without.

Then... 1 day... every fish I hit was when I was using a floater bag, now I'm about 90% floaters.

I see floaters in most bags on shore too. To each their own.
