WoW 1473 members...but let`s be realistic, there is alarge # of people who have joined and never posted a single post...I am talking since 2006, and 2007...I seriously think the members lists need to be edited, and these people removed so that the # reflects a more accurate representation of the forums makeup. If you are looking for someone to do some booting of people that have never posted, or even visited, then I volunteer some time to go through the list and start axe`ing these people. just a thought!

yeah, it's not fair that these people are joining, getting free info, and not helping us out at all, i think that anyone who has been on here for more than a week and hasn't posted more than twice should be booted

i was just thinking about this the other day.
i say all with 1 or less posts get booted. obviously they just joined cause of the free giveaway.... and nothing more.
i'm sure openfire has access to statistics such as how often they log on and whatnot.

in the end, this decision is up to the admin.

No,
We should really be booting/ban them just because they are inactive.
What we should do is just suspend those accounts and there should be a system to allow them to re-activate themselves if they want to by contacting the admin(s). There should be some sort of procedure for it.

I registered quite some time ago and today has been my first few posts. I intend to stay as most of the guys here are from the same areas from me. Hope I can make a few friends and even fishing buddies in the near future. =P

And no, you should ban or kick anyone that doesn't want to post on this site. It's their decision and just like me, I've only been out once this year and got skunked. So I can't access any parts of the forum. I do plan to try out many of the ponds though. From Mississauga to Markham where my gf lives.

Quite some time ago?
It shows that you've registered on March 26, 2009 only?

thats what i was thinking, quite some time ago? dam than i must old and most you must be ANCIENT!!!! lol.

Ok, Ok, Now let me start by saying, I don`t wann just ban people, but there are probabaly alot of accounts set up inwhich the person has not been back since, and I am talking 10 11, 12, 13 , 14 month old accounts inwhich no posts or return visits have been made, should simply be deleted, if the people wish to re-join, there would be no penalty, just sign on back up...I am talking solely to give the board a better representation in numbers...1473 people and half never come on...thats not realistic. Thats all! thanks

LOL, opps... What I wanted to say was I found this site quite some time ago, but never registered because I wasn't sure if I would stay. I am apart of 2 other home sites and use the same SN. I've been wanting to register for quite some time as I notice there are a lot of locals here, but never had anything to say so I didn't do it until not too long ago. But, you guys need to lighten up. I chose to join was because I am planning to try out lots of the ponds around here and make reports of them.
If there is anything you don't wish to share openly to the lurkers then don't post it or pm the person with your information. I would have to say a lot of people don't stay is because the site is too small. Although people take the information without contribution, how great the information is also the reason why someone would want to register in the first place.

I don't see what the big deal is! If guys want to register and contribute great. If they want to register and never show their face so to speak then it is their loss.

Do we really need an "ACCURATE" number of members? What purpose would that serve. I would ban the ones that come on here and post SPAM(usually 1 post to their name)

I have seen a couple of those in my short time here. As for everyone else, let them be.

DIRK......

There are a large number of members who joined the forum last year just to get the freebie and then disappeared. I discontinued the promotion because the majority of people just wanted the free lure and didn't stick around. (It got posted on RedFlagdeals and we had non-fishermen joining just for that purpose.) So that accounts for a large percentage of the inflated members count.

More recently however, the increasing members number is from a group of russian forum spammers. Just looking over the log from today, we've had 36 new users registered on April 15th alone.

They use software that automatically registers accounts on hundreds of thousands of forums, and then when the time is right, they use these fake accounts to spam. It's a real pain.

The "captcha" that this forum uses for registration was just recently cracked by the Russian spammers... Meaning that the software they use can now enter the visual verification code needed to register.

I'm looking into a way to combat this. Something will be in place ASAP to put a stop to it. Once it's done I will prune the inactive users who have joined but never posted. I have a simple solution in mind that involves answering a question related to fishing during the registration process that only a human could answer.

I'll post here when I have more to report to you guys.

Openfire:

Why not use one of those email verification registration?

Or is that how we are? I can't remember.

Set yourself a Gmail account to forward those verification emails.

Yes, we do use email verification... The problem is that the spammers use software which does it all, and that includes the email verification.

I like the fishing related question idea. It would probably be some time before spammers developa program with the logic to answer a question like that.

Thanks Openfire, thats a great solution to this ongoing problem. Let me know if you need help pruning, I have nothing but time on my hands!

when you are making the question, you might have to make it an easy one in case someone is signing up to learn about fishing and doesn't know a thing about it
