MNR and Local Police

So a friend of mine was fishing an east creek, when he saw 3 people with nets, no rods, just nets, netting salmon, gutting them, and throwing the carcass back in the river. disgusting. after 3 different anglers told them that is illegal, they didn';t leave, so he went up to the local police station, found 2 officers, and was told they wouldn't do anything cause they were just ending their shift and were now off duty. but said he could use the phone inside to call someone.

So he called the MNR, spoke to a lady there, told her what was happening, and that he could see mitch phinneys truck, and new he was in the area, and if she could get a hold of him and send him to lay charges. he was then told that she couldn't give him that information, and that it was out of her hands.

Thats super frustrating,

Waterloo region had a very severe thunderstorm a couple weeks back, certain intersections had the power go out - people were getting out of there cars and yelling at each other because apparently no one understands the concept of a 4 way stop. Anyway, I go to the police station which is literally ONE, count 'em, ONE block down from this particular intersection.

Wait 20 minutes, while the mild natural disaster rages on outside - some officer spoke with me, told me "out of our jurisdiction", to which I replied "isn't it your duty to you know... help people?" Response? "Sometimes people have to know to help themselves". What the fuck? Seriously?

All the while a fully uniformed officer is cleaning an office window with some windex.

Seriously, I really dislike most police services. I fish the MNR was more helpful. That blows.

sad...but this is why those people continue doing it.

If they were caught once, they would NEVER ever again do it. And they would tell their friends to never do it again because the fines they would receive would scare them off forever.

too bad MNR doesnt actually "care" when they need to. Yet when I forget my license in my car, and im in the middle of a lake HAVING paid for a license since I was 18...they give me a huge speech and a $150 fine. ( the cops gave me the ticket, still, they care about THAT instead)

I tend to avoid river fishing with others, especially during salmon season. Im scared of getting hooked. I even stay far away from fly fishers because iv gotten hooked more than once from their back cast. Snaggers scare me.

you don't want to use 80lb you will have a real hard time breaking your line unless you want a fight when you try to get it back!! I would use 15-20 lb

snaggers should scare us all but it wont ever change-no point in having money dumped into an nature cops--couple tickets here and there-some fines and still overflowing with idiots--wont ever change

If you get enough enforcement on the rivers and hand out the maximum penalties even for a month you will change the tune on the rivers just like if you put a cop at every interchange on the highway for a week you will put a huge reduction on the speeders !! If you know it is heavily patrolled enforced you will stop doing it!!

quebec has some of the most strict river rules i have seen, lottery system to fish sections, only 2 people per section, if a 3rd shows up, you're on a 15 minute clock to rotate out patrols by MNR or river police more than once per day to check licenses, we should learn something from this
