Modified floats

Just wondering if anyone has any experience in modifying floats...
I've been thinking a lot about floats lately, and I've seen people in the past using modified floats.

I've wondered if adding the wire would take a 3g rated float down to a 2g float, allowing the angler to not need as much shot, but still have the float they require.

What are all the benefits? If anyone can shed some light on this topic, I'd really appreciate it.
