Was tipped off to a pond which my friend fished twice in the last 3 weeks. First time he caught a 1.5 and a 2. Yesterday he pulled out a 3 and a 5. I had to check it out.

Fished two spots for 1.5 hours and not even a bite. Went to the third spot and finally saw sunfish so I had hope. Didn't take long before I had 6 fish on and landed 4.

Always satisfying to explore new spots and have them pay off. And also pays to always have some gear in your trunk just in case you pass by an intriguing body of water.

thx.

ya i think west end is best in general for small bodies of water and rivers. great for canoes, yaks, and small boats. and more shore fishing opportunities on ponds and storm ponds. more storm ponds of course due to bigger population.

east end has fewer bodies of water to fish but is closer to the big ones in kawarthas and nearby.

north end of city doesn't have as many bodies of water for fishing as west but has a lot of ponds and people on here have discussed their catches from there. north end is also closer to cottage country than west end.

Nice. Gotta love the pond action. What rig were you using? Texas, Carolina, weightless?

thx.

started with texas with a weight but weight was catching too much algae so went weightless after that. tried wacky style as well but then switched back to texas at the 3rd spot.

it's actually the first time i've ever used texas without a weight and trying it out in front of me i saw how slowly it drops from surface to bottom. a very different action than with the weight. learned something new that day.

anywhere around the GTA, east or west have good fish spots. The work you put to find them will give you great rewards...I have found a pond north east that looks untouched. park on the side road threw a senko and hauled in 2 4lb lmb, came back 2 weeks after with worms and bobber, hauled in about 8 lmb (variety of sizes), cameback 3 days and there are 3 cars parked and no spot to fish...then passed by a month later (no fishing sign) lol.

Nice, it feels good to catch a bass in a pond. The pond near me is over fished and rarely do bass bite.

do any drainage ponds have fish in them ?
if you get sunfish...there's most probably going to be bass. best thing to try is worm on a bobber.

How do the fish get into the drainage ponds?
Curious about this myself. I figured some are introduced specifically for the purpose of preventing the water from becoming a cesspool and mosquito habitat. Bass and sunnies will eat the bugs in the evenings when they are on the surface of the water. Catfish and bottom feeders will take care of the dirty work on the bottom and prevent algae buildup or something?

  • With the high gas prices and long working hours we endure, it seems these Urban ponds a saving grace! ... Couple weeks ago I drove an hour and 40 mins north to go fishing with nothing to show for except a couple perch and a small largie.... Got home with some daylight remaining, and hit one of the local ponds and salvaged the day with about a dozen largies between 7" and 15" ... Go figure.. lol

exactly. shore fishing vs boat fishing could be a highly debated topic but ultimately it comes down to each individual and what they value and also what they can afford.

shore fishing can be boring. i found it boring after a couple of years which is why i got waders and then eventually an inflatable boat so i could enjoy some kind of open water but also not have to pay launch fees, truck, etc. but a few times every year i will still shore fish when you only got an hour or it's really cold.

even though i had some really nice catches from shore, i yearned for that feeling of being on water, which in itself is a great feeling, as long as the weather ain't too bad. and that sense of freedom on the water and having the ability to explore a lake or river and see different things, etc cannot be discounted. but it comes with a price and each person has to determine what that feeling is worth to them.

i know a couple of guys who spend thousands each year doing tournaments and also regular fishing. the costs of having a bass boat and a truck plus gas, launch fees, hotels, etc really add up. and sometimes they get skunked after all that. sometimes they catch 5 pounders. but they love the feelings of competition, freedom, driving fast in a boat, and anticipation of landing a huge fish.

meanwhile, guys i know who periodically rent boats for $100 two hours up north only to get skunked, come back home and stop at lakes or ponds on the way home and cast with their kids and catch 3lb SMB or 20 inch walleye.
