Early this week I went to nearby river to fish for late afternoon steelheads. About few minutes of casting, I had fish on. Fought for about 2 minutes but hook came off. I went to the same spot early next morning and caught two smallmouth bass. Released both of them.. (I knew bass season is closed)
Today, I went to my favourite trib to try one more time. (went there last time and lost a big one) After bit of walk, I hooked one but lost it again..
Moved on and kept walking walking and walking... At the end of the day, my friend and I ended up catching one each. What a nice day to be out there today..

I was surprised that flies can be as productive as any other baits out there since all the steels (3 to be exact) that I lost this week was on flies.

Gotta love those bucks with the big kype. Probably fought like a horse on steroids too! Congrats bro

You live and you learn. Very nice fish and great job keeping then healthy.

Nice buck...and the smallies...Ive been wacking big smallmouth on flies lately in the credit also.

Yes.. I felt like I could catch them as many as I want if I stay there long enough..
And they were fighiting hard.. Maybe I will try to catch bass (never fished it before) when season opens.
Here is the pictures..

That's a nice looking smallmouth. I've been getting a few too lately. Seems the warm weather we had earlier brought some up.

Okie... gotta be carefule next time.
Just have one question tho... How do you know if its spawning area or not?? I have no clue locate them. I just thought they are spawining way uptream not down the stream where opens all year round.

As for the flies, the only bait I used before was salmon roe sac and thought it was the only option. After I used different baits added some variations to my fishing tactics, I was surprised by the fact that it was more effective in fishing steelheads. Flies were one of them.
I recently used single egg yarn and was very successful. I will post some pictures later~~

Look for cleaned off gravel and "valleys" carved into the river bottom.

They will spawn wherever they can. For instance steel spawn in the trench at the ganny. And thats right beside the lake.. heh..

I almost walked into a few spawning beds on the geen last weekend. Its easy to not know what they are unless someone points them out to you.

Live and learn.

As for flies, I can definitely attest to them being more productive than roe and everything else. (At least for me).

Tandem stonefly yarnie never fails.

The fish will protect their nest until the eggs hatch. If you get near and stir up the dirt, that is not a good thing.
