I have had my fair share of MRE's and a few mountain house meals on the trail but have mainly just brought sandwiches with me on day trips. A couple of trips ago, on a cold snowy morning I ate a cold as hell sandwich on the banks of a river while my friend took 5 minutes to boil some water and eat a warm mountain house meal. Although sandwiches will still be a mainstay for lunches on day trips I am planning a 5 day fly out trip to southeast Alaska for steelhead in early May and want to eat something warm. It is still cold with rain in this time frame and just planning on eating these during winter outings as well

My question is .....For those of you who eat these meals what are your go to's. Which ones are your favorites?

i have one of those small camp bbqs in the back of my truck, and pack some nice ball park hotdogs, or sandwich steaks (rib eye steaks cut at 1/4") and toss em on there

I made a shelf kind of thing for my big buddy heater so when is warming me and the hut, it also heats tea.. Coffee.. Lasagna.. Small sambosa style things. Works great.

I find with those space meals that the simpler the recipe, the better it tastes. Once you start getting into fancier type meals they tend to taste fake. Keep it simple with lasagna or pasta type meals. If weight isn't an issue, get cans of Stagg Chili - delish

...and not shower for 5 days? Maybe take a dip in some cold, fish infested water to freshen up?

Thanks for the replys. I have done five day no shower trips in the past. A long day on the water can be masked with a camp fire. Just bathe in the smoke. :)

There are some premade curry pouches at Sobeys that are delicious; fish love the left offers when you rinse things out. If you can boil water your options are endless.

I am not very picky painfully and love the mountain house meals.

If you are adventurous you can take a steak, wrap it in cheese cloth and soak it in vinegar. You won't notice the taste and it'll be fine for a few days out of the fridge (some say up to four). I haven't tried this yet so YMMV.

Five days out you need some canned soup (heavy to pack) or freeze dried MSR pouches, had some good uncle ben's pre-packaged meals with rice and chicken for protein, just boil water. I used to make chili and freeze it in a milk bag then use it as an ice block, good for a couple of days then heat it up yum yum. Bears like all of those too unfortunately. Oatmeal for brekkie. Snack wise- gorp, good old raisins and peanuts in a big bag mixed together. Oh and don't forget the Jack links jerky, sweet chili...
