Let me start this off by saying that I am not sure of which section this belongs in. The Mountsberg Conservation Area is located west of Campbellville, south of the 401 (south of Guelph). You can see the location on the map below.
On the map, the green blocks show the parking in the CA. The Blue lines show our drift patterns, and the Red splotches show the areas where we have caught fish. It is a shallow and weedy reservoir, home to large pike (reports of fish as large as 15 lbs out of a small reservoir south of the 401!), large (5+ lb) bass, crappie, panfish and brown bullhead.
Our first trip to Mountsberg was on the morning of June 14. It was an overcast day with westerly wind. It was our first time going to Mountsberg, and we decided to try and get there around 7:30 or 8 am. We ended up getting there at around 8 am. By the time we got our inflatable errr... inflated... and ready to go, it was 8:30.
We started out by throwing inline spinners of all sorts and sizes. With 4 of us in the inflatable, we were throwing 4 different sizes in 4 different patterns. On my third cast, I caught the first fish of the day - a small pike, no more than 1 lb. It was, however, a sign of things to come. We fished until around 1 pm, and caught a total of 27 fish! Most were pike weighing in around 3 lb with the odd fish at 4-5 lbs. We also caught a couple of OOS LM bass and a couple of perch. We threw out inline spinners, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. We found the inline spinners, burned just above the weeds to work well, as well as sunfish pattern shallow shad raps. The following are some of the fish we caught.
This was a great outing for our first time to Mountsberg! We never went more than a half hour with a fish on, and hammerhandle pike, in these numbers are a lot of fun! All fish were catch and release.
With results like these, we have been back since; our most recent trip being July 5. On this day, we were out on the water by 7:30 pm working topwater baits. There were only 3 of us on this trip, but that didn't slow us down! We got 3 strikes on top water buzz baits, but went 0 for 3 on that front. So we switched to inline spinners again, and caught fire! On this day, between the 3 of us, we caught 29 fish! Here are pics of a couple.
All in all, this place has proven to be a wonderful place to fish. And within a half hour from my house to boot! Fopr those shore fishermen, there is a dam along the south of the reservoir, and a railroad and causeway that bisect the reservoir. I have seen many people fish from both the dam and the causeway. I have also seen a couple of guys in waders work the shore to the left of the southern boat launch.
Hope you all have the luck we have had here!
